I haven't been excited by music for a while...until now!
Hi people,
I am sure you lot get this a lot on here but its true, dub step ffing rocks! I am a drum n bass/breakz/reggae head and only really discovered what dubstep is all about on Friday after going to Plastic people (We were gonna go to Herbal, but it was rammed) and I had a brilliant time. I am loving the raw, varied, dark sound of dubstep, which reminds me of early jungle tunes. I am a dnb/breakz producer in my spare time and would love to have a stab at producing some dubstep...watch this space...probably won't be any good though!
However, though the dubstep sound is a lot more creative than drum n bass is these days, I can see it falling into a few traps that recent dnb has. Firstly, the wah-wah sound can sound heavy but if its coming out in too many choons (like dnb these days), then I can see dubstep loosing its creativity. This is one thing that I picked up at the club, but I can only assume that this is quite a popular sound in dancefloor dubstep?
Another thing that I can see slowing down dubstep's progress is pills! Dubstep and pills dont really go together and I saw quite a few funny sights on friday. I am not saying people should not take pills and have a good time, but I can see it slowing down dubstep's progress as ppl loose their subjectivity and can't really judge what is and isn't a good choon when played out on the floor. I don't know if this has had anything to do with the fall in dancefloor dnb, but i suspect it has as the whole floor will go off to any dub that's played and so djs will play continue playing it, giving it more exposure thus dictating the sound that comes to represent the music. I know I shouldn't be dissing your scene since I am a noob to it, (and I don't really think I am having a stab at it) but I just hope dubstep doesn't have to suffer the monotony that dnb is suffering right now. I really hope it can maintain the level of creativity that it has achieved because I haven't been excited by music, in general, for quite a while now!

Hey James, welcome to Dubstep.
This is a topic of some debate among a proportion of the Forum gang. Quite a long and exhausting thread about the dangers of stagnation and snappy names here: http://dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=13341
Personally, I think that we shouldn't worry about this sort of thing. There will always be producers making interesting and varied stuff, it is up to us seek it out.

Its the very 1st time you've been to a dubstep dance and heard just a handful of DJs play! If you were to go when for E.G Kode 9 was playing, or D1 or even Skream etc you would of heard a different slice of the sound altogether mate.....Jimmy_b wrote:Hi people,

safe for your post, but after going to just ONE night and then saying it was quite repetitive due to the WAH WAH bass i find a bit odd!
For starters Geeneus and plastician play a silmilar kinda vibe, and loefah is ALL ABOUT BASS (have you seen his myspace?!) Its the equivilent of me going to a DnB rave seeing Bukem and calibre play and then saying the whole of the DnB scene is too light and floaty.....nah mean
Great that you loved the sound, but dont get disheartened by what you've heard so far, thats just the tip of the ice-burg....
So many great DJs and producers doing great things at the moment...
Get yourself down to a DMZ night
peace n lovelyness

He's not frickin joking either! Once bitten, longtime smitten. Welcome to waking up with basslines in your head, getting to know Rinse schedules inside out and spending bare cash/time/headspace on buying/listening to/downloading tunes..rudetone. wrote:greetings mate! and big up for dippin yourself into the dubstep sceneage! but watch out...you'll be sucked in before you can say brockout!!

Easy,
Sorry man, I wasn't trying to say that dubstep is repetitive n that...on the contrary, it is the most creative music I have heard for a long time. However, my little rant was mainly about venting my frustration with the state of dnb right now and I was just hoping the same didnt happen to dubstep because you guys really are onto something. The reason for me having a go at the wah wah sound was that it has come to represent everything that I hate with drum n bass right now. But then again, I shouldnt really apply that to dubstep because my experience with it is very minimal.
So, to show some love for your scene, this is what I've loved about it so far (and I've been listening to it all weekend now!):
the crowd is varied...not your usual breed of monged out chavs...from geeks, to rude bwoys, to your inbetweens, everyone seems to be welcome.
No hostility...seems to be all about having a good time
How DJs etc are not treated like untouchable gods as they are in DnB
The fact its still a young type of music where the emphasis is still on creativity not production quality (though I am by no means trying to slate dubstep on this...the production is pretty good as far as I can tell, especially in producing that warm sine wave bass sound loved in reggae dub and jungle)
In the mean time, I shall definitely be heading down to more nights, listening at home and booting up cubase and reason to have a bash at producing it. I might even have a whack at mixing it once I have found some vinyl I like but then again I might have trouble as I have been mixing at 174 bpm for a long time now...that's another thing, what bpm is dubstep roughly at??
In the meantime, cheers for the replies

yes James!
I hope you didnt find my post hostile, it wasnt ment to be! Jus sayin FWD was only the beginning for you, theres a whole bunch of other dubstep sounds out there!
EX DnB myself i know where your coming from on the whole wha wha wha sound, which i loved at 1st (Gdub and twisted etc few years back) but everyones jumped on the bandwagon (no pun intended
) and now the whole 'jump up' sound is based on having that kind of wah wah Bline in it, which does nothing for me either. I cant see the comparison myself as dubstep bass is just on a whole diff level i personally think....! Logos put it brilliantly!
like you said, the scene is very refreshing too, one big happy fammo, ravers, promoters, DJs, MC's alike all got love and respect for eachother..... awwww i actually love it, proper proof that music brings people together.....
See you at a dance soon
peace n lovelyness x x x
