Has facebook taken over our lives?

Dunno about you but I've noticed a distinct lack or decrease in the amount of activity on here. Posts that used to generate close to or over a thousand views now only get a little over a hundred. Myspace has gone a similar way with some artists profiles not being updated regularly and event invites receiving little response.

Has facebook or dare I say it twitter taken over completely?

Lol u know what,you have a point trust me. the amount of people that spend time posting irrelevant updates on facebook etc is unbelieveable ,and twitter aswell . fair enough this is what there made 4 ....but from when these things become the centre of peoples days, i think it becomes like an addictive thing. n e ways i hate facebookn twitter..i think myspace is ok because it does have alot more meaning to it than just creating a profile with your face on it n allowing people to find u through there database.

how can you hate something that's meant for communication? what you should not do is linger too much, procrastinate, refresh pages when there's obviously NOTHING going on, etc.

Yes, facebook has taken over our lives - I know people who only go on facebook when they go online, however, I'm new here (after reading the forum for quite some time), and I'm enjoying the fun community thing everyone has going on, so hopefully, as the weird attraction to facebook decreases, people will come back

Short answer: Yes lol! I think people have taken it wayy past reasonable convenience when it comes to communicating with peers. Every irrelevant fact has to go on status updates, then have someone start a massive unecessary drama spark over it to try and validate themselves. People spend all day on that shit, their hours socialising in real life consist of talking about what's going on with facebook . Myspace is dead now but i liked that when people were on there, i would go on there for a few minutes to check messages, comments etc, organise something with my social life and get on with it, people are just obsessed with facebook and twitter to the point where it just doesn't seem healthy.

I see what your saying ,but my point is if ure telling people you jus woke up, then 5 mins later u tell people ure making sumthink 2 eat...its not really communication is it?, especially if no1 asked u what ure doing lol, what neurotik said is probably what i ment....but i put it in a wrong way.

we're new at it. our civilization has never faced so much freedom of speech and opportunity to be heard. it's a practical application of post-modernism: nobody might read your posts or status updates but whenever you post something about yourself you feel important. not to mention that socnets put emphasis on ideas and personality instead of clothes and muscles.

as i said.. we're new at it, we're still doing it wrong and everybody is doing it in his own way. just.. DON'T judge. you're either in or out or everything in between.

Lot's of good points raised thus far. I don't hate facebook but do spend far too much time on it. It has kind of become an alternative to actual face to face socializing but it is unfortunately an essential promotional tool. Before facebook I was on this forum all the time and now I've decided I need to reconnect with the Dubstep community so here I am again. It's a shame about myspace falling by the wayside as it was (and still is) a great way to hear new dubs but it can be quite frustratingly slow. Twitter on the other hand is something I am actively giving a wide berth as it seems that it's just about the mindless updates and not much else. Admittedly I've not been on twitter but like heroin I don't want to try it in case I find I like it and get hooked.

facebook has been designed and refined to make it user-friendly. It's taken over from msn type programs,it acts as a diary, you can have youtube battles etc. i think more people use it and spend more time on it over something like myspace because it works a lot better. most people can't be arsed to do html code to make their profile look nice. i rarely use myspace anymore, mainly as i'm not doing any radio show at the moment or playing out anywhere.

i agree with you though ken. people use it too much. i had this thought which scared me a little the other day. i wanted to get a message to someone. i din;t want to sms as it was to a foreign number, i saw the person wasn't on fassbook, and i considered phoning them. but then i thought it would be a pain in the balls to have to talk, exchange pleasanteries and basically waste time talking to the person about everything but the thing i needed doing. kind of sad in my mind as that means i think it's a waste of time to spend a few moments of my life engaged in the art of conversation. but i fucking hate phones tbh.

my point is totally anecdotal and meaningless on reflection.

I like Facebook tbh. I get a little annoyed with certain things like event invites especially. I like the fact I can hook up with everyone that cares and it intergrates soundcloud and youtube and everything important. It is tough reaching out to new people or anonymous viewers tho. Been on Twitter for a year, I am really fucking bored with it. I guess it's better if you are never at your computer. Catching bits on your cell phone when you get a second. Yeah I'd say Facebook has taken over. Everything else just tries to copy at this point.

I rarely go on facebook. last week I found myself logged in and browsing my friends list...had 250 friends (for those who live on facebook that's probably not even a large number). Then I realized I actually know personally/speak to very few of these people. And the ones I do speak to I never contact through facebook.

So I started deleting names of the randoms....then thought it would be far quicker to cancel the account completely and start anew. Only adding people worth adding.

Beyond it being surely just about the best promotional tool out there (got what became a fairly well attended weekly dubstep night started in Cardiff, where there was just nothing before, pretty much solely through facebook promotion) it really is a pile of ass.

It seems to serve 2 purposes. Either people communicate with people they actually get on well with through the facebook middle man, or people "re-connect" with others they lost contact with ages ago (which in my book tends to mean people you didnt exactly get on like a house on fire with in the first place). I guess its been good for saying a quick hello to people travelling about, seeing what theyre up to...but to be honest, i think id much rather hear the stories afterwards over a spliff and a beer!

definitely, facebook is the king of promotion! you barely need flyers anymore. just look at that crazy squat party in london, all through facebook. but it does have a purpose and personally i find it very useful for seeing whats going on in my area and catching up with mates spread around the country. low spending 45 minutes on the phone to someone when youre on credit!

also, its not all facebooks fault that the dsf has gone a bit stale. it might be that people are busy endlessly posting status updates but is that any worse then endless debates about the pro's and con's of dirty dubstep or whether you rate rusko's new tune? i think the board still has alot to give but i find myself spending a lot less time on here because theres not as much to talk about.
