Underbelly

It's a cross between The Wire, The Sopranos and Neighbours

Interested to know how Oz is dated given that it's 100% set on the inside of a prison where there are no cultural reference points, plus with a fine cast, many of whom can be seen more prominently on our screens these days? Or do you just mean it's literally quite old? Anyway, Oz is, for me, the first word in HBO. Not to say it's the best, but that's what showed me what high quality tv was all about and had me gripped for years staying up till the wee hours to catch it every week.

I say Deadwood after The Wire simply because it's the best thing I've seen since the latter ended. I've still got a series to go and I really, really don't want it to end.

Given that I seem to agree with you on just about everything I might well move on to this next. Heard nowt but good things.

I would quite like to watch Lost or The Wire but i've never had the chance really. The Apprentice smashes it though

Sopranos.

I thought it was better. Dont hate me, but the police shit in The Wire could get boring and I didn't give a shit about half the po po. Sopranos has a much tighter look at characters.

I got the boxset for 25 quid. Go! Go!

I've seen two fantastic things on that show.

I thought Generation Kill was a bit shit to be honest. Very underwhelming.

Best things about Generation Kill were the bits with Ziggy from The Wire singing.

it's based on a book
I really want to read the book, alot of the chararcters were actually suspended /court martialed etc for some of the things they did that got written about (Captain America for example).
I almost prefer it to the Wire as it is less sprawling (it's not trying to capture the essence of an entire city) and you can keep it all in your head.
The Corner was Simon and Burn's 'try out' for the Wire, very similar but not as polished or ambitious. Many actors from The Wire play different characters, don't expect the same sort of comic relief and emotional balance tho, it's a brutal bleakout focusing almost soley on the drug addict's savage lives..

Treme is out later this year, it's David Simon again (the man is a TV god) but it's about the musicians quarter in New Orleans after Katrina as they rebuild the city, Bunk appears at the end of the trailer so that's sold it for me. Looks great and they have an amazing team of residents and authors to really give it the same authenticity the Wire had (hopefully).

As everyone has said, watch Sopranos if you haven't seen it. Begining to end. It is a mighty series that is almost perfect save the last few series which get progressively weirder and dare I say it silly. I couldn't say a program is 'the best ever' but Sopranos is certainly up there with the greatest TV masterpieces.

EDIT - Also the West Wing is fucking great 8)

Best program to appear on TV in recent times is Peep Show. Standard.
