Help me out detroit heads

Post by analogheart » Tue Feb 16, 2010 12:15 am

Recently I been feelin a lot of detroit sounds and diggin old and new. Tbh there's a lot of stuff I like and a lot which bores me to shit as well. So far I'm liking a blend of detroit hip/hop, soulful/vocal house etc. Stuff like Blake Baxter, Abe Duque, Moodymann, Aaron Carl, Omar-S (love the sidetrax stuff ), Andres, Theo Parrish. I'm less into the super deep ambientish stuff and I'm looking in Hardwax, Juno etc but coming up with a lot of that. So any recommendations to more artists, labels would be cool thanx

Artists / recommendations
get the Anthony "Shake" Shakir - Frictionalism compilation, it's a winner.
Kevin Saunderson
Carl Craig

Labels
Metroplex, Planet E, Submerge, UR, Transmat, M-Plant, 430 west

not strictly Detroit but Network records, Tresor records, Eevo Lute Muzique, R&S, they all have quite a bit of stuff from the D on them.

Reggie Dokes
Scott Grooves
Shawn Rudiman.....

.....are all worth checking out.
It was entirely instrumental at this time, like jazz gone wild...a very tribal sound: very electronic. We would play like that for about 10 minutes. Then everybody would have to get really stoned again…But what we had put into 10 minutes was so total and so very savage – the earth shook, then cracked, and SWALLOWED ALL MISERY WHOLE.

Detroit Techno- for me was the most innovative style of dance music to emerge in the mid 80s fusing sophisticated sounds, heavy drum programming and funk driven rugged b-lines. Also a little known fact is that this music became a staple for jazz dancers during this time when you hear it you can tell why.

I truly believe these and other old skool jams will be coming back, I have heard some of them sampled and of course the bopstar track is based on Nude photo- It would be great to hear some of these old skool bangers along side the Fingarpint Nightimes and Geeneus yellowtails of today...

There are tons of tracks many already mentioned but here are some more lps\artist\tracks to check for some of these are true faves

Techno the dance sound of Detroit (Ten)
The Relics LP there are 2 versions one on Buzz and one on DFC
The innovator Vinyl boxset or CD
The 313 LP (Infonet)

Blake Baxter- When we used to play, Crimes of the heart, Sexuality
Carl Craig- BFC\Galaxy
Rhythm is Rhythm – the dance, stop move it Nude Photo ,It is what it is, KAOS, Feel Surreal, Freestyle, Spaced out ,MS6

Reese Rock to the beat, Just want another chance, The groove that won’t stop (both versions are FIRE)
Reese- Baseline (latter day excellence)
R-Tyme – Illusion (Juan Atkins Mix)
R-Tyme- R-Theme

Juan Atkins- 3MB Jazz is the teacher

Model 500

Octave One - I believe

Underground resistance – loads of stuff by them but for me the Nation 2 Nation EP (possibly the most creative use of a 303 ever!)is outstandingly good

Kenny Larkin- We shall overcome, rubbernotes, Colony
Psyance- Motion
Cybersonik Melody 928
