what sampler is everybody using?

Post by yellowhighlighter » Wed Feb 17, 2010 4:51 pm

i used to just use the nnxt in reason. then when i switched to renoise i didn't really need a sampler but now i've started using reaper (with renoise) and i started to use shortcircuit1 (for some reason shortcircuit2 refuses to work and crashes my computer).

i'm used to mpcs and my sp303 and 404.

kontakt seems the most popular but is expensive, and maybe is overkill.

so just wondering what is everybody else using software (or hardware) wise for their sampling needs.

I tried a few freeware ones but FL's inbuilt sampler really does everything I need and more.

I use the default sampler in whatever DAW I use on the day. Hope I have helped you somehow:D
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

kontakt mainly - of all software samplers ive used (admittedly not many) its by far the best. its so powerful and flexible and its at the heart of my general sound design process.

hardware wise i have an akai s1100 and akai s6000, but they dont get much use, mainly due to laziness. they sound fucking sick though.

I hear it used a lot but what makes it better than other samplers?

Do you have to load it as a VST I guess yeh? do you need one for each instrument or can you load multiple instruments thru it?

MPC-500 is my primary for arrangement.
ASR-X is my secondary but I just use it for tweaking sounds etc.

I have also used:
Yamaha tx16w (have no idea why I keep this one around)
Ensoniq Mirage

its a multi channel vst so 1 instance and you can have like 16 different outputs, up to 64 patches on it (i think) plus its got fucking incredible modulation options and loads of good effects plus the filters sound pretty fucking sweet. its soo deep, i consider myself pretty good with it but in reality im only scratching the surface.

saying that emulator x has the z-plane filters and some cool fx. unfortunately the interface is a bit wack when you compare it to kontakt.

Yeah ive emulator x too but never use it cos of the clunky interface, its realy sad. I mostly use directwave , the vst sampling ability is very cool.

ASR-X headz in the house :t:

I don't really use soft samplers. When working with audio, I just put it on the timeline where I need it.

Fruity itself is essentially a sampler, so I use that.

I do use kontakt for premade patches, but I don't really do any sound design in there. It is extremely powerful, and I should give it a look, but I don't want to learn anything new, ha ha, at least technically.

I used to, and prolly will use again, battery for drums and more beat based stuffs.

For oldschool sound design traditional sampler type stuff, I use direct wave (which is actually a commercial version of shortcircuit, if I'm not mistaken). Heads up, Direct Wave's filters don't sound that good, and it's a pretty buggy piece of software whose dev died tragically, so may never be fixed.

I used the nnxt then went to Kontakt 3, no need to ever use another sampler.

Kontakt 3
Battery 3
EXS24 (logic)

No particular order. Each one does a better at a particular job. say no more ;)

Damn - everyone samples with bare ting:

I just load something into Edison, clip out what I want, and drag it into the little sequencer thing in FL.

Emulator looks cool... there up to 3 now. The price is crazy though, they want way to damn much for it. I've been looking for a good PC sampler that wasn't Kontakt or short circuit. Havn't really found one I like yet.
