nub dj here in need of advise

Post by zoomed » Tue Feb 23, 2010 3:34 am

greetings to the dubstep community!

so i live in mississauga (a suburban city close to toronto), Canada and i found this cool little lounge/bar that is kinda open to new sounds.
i've been pushing dubstep on college radio for about 6 months and my mixes are finally getting somewhere.

Talked to the owner and he asked me to drop a mix his way.
Hoping to get a bit of advise on how to negotiate the terms.
i'd like to spin the last thursday of every month and push dubsteppy/garage/future sounds. (gotta ease ppl into the harder shiz  )
how much does the avg dj make a night?
I've heard that djs usually make their paper at the door but the scene is technically non existent and it would be silly to charge a crowd (mainly friends) when they're coming out to support. i will be promoting the shows.
would it be unusual if i were to request the bar to pay me a flat fee?

any advise on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance.

my 2 cents

if this is just a bar, not a "venue," your best bet is to ask for a small percentage of bar sales. from my experience, DJs who hold regular parties at bars get paid one of two ways.

100 percent of their door charge, and they have to provide their own door person/cashier

or

10-20% of total bar revenue.

flat rates are tricky and it usually depends on a multitude of variables, ranging from your name recognition, to time slot, to potential capacity, etc...

Yeah I wouldn't ask for a flat fee just yet. I'm spinning at a place right now and really I only get paid a percentage once the place gets pretty bumpin. Then once the scene gets bigger, and your have a decent amount of people showing up consistently, then talk it over with the guy and decide which route you want to take.

wouldn't go in demanding anything yet, do a couple and all going well the boss man will see your drawing in people THEN you can start getting your cut, or take your crowd elsewhere and you can prove it brings people in to get your money.
