I can take constructive criticism on the chin, it helps in me improve. But when someone just says "that's really poor" without backing it up then it's kinda disheartening to the point of thinking....well if it's poor what's the point?

90% of the time, thier only saying that because it is really well done n they cant fuck wit it, but its not to thier personal taste, so they felt a need to be cocks.

hmm I'd say it's a case of being too attached to a song.

If the song is actually really good then fuck 'em they're just saying it to take the piss and it shouldn't bother you.

If the song is actually crap then learn to accept this sort of criticism too, regardless of how good you think the song is.

I've had it before where I've spent weeks perfecting a track thinking it was the hottest shit, only to be told by people when it was done that it wasn't all that.

The hard part is working out why you're song is crap and building from there. It's kind of like constructive criticism but people don't give you glues.

(btw I can't think of one big name artist that hasn't had *insert artists name here* is shit, if you want to get to the point where you're getting regular releases and making a name for yourself I'd work harder on taking this sort of negativity more lightly)

I liked the idea,

the instruments could do with a bit of work and the timing is pretty out,

How can you know where to improve if someone has said "that's really poor" without backing up his statement?

And how do you diffrentiate between what's good and what's bad if you think it's hot regardless?

Cos I tend to make a track, think it's good, and then hear good feedback from it.........but then a week later think it's shit (I'm my own worst critic)

Track in question is in the signature. Hearing back now, the drums are a bit weak because I tried EQing for the first time.

And there's certain parts where the transition is bad. And the vocals could do with being EQd (in good time when I know how)

but aside from that, objectively it's not THAT bad. Or is it?

Yeah, good clean constructive criticism. At least I know where to improve now. I tried EQing the drums, but I didn't get it right.

The timing on the drums is waaayyyy off. I don't know if that's intentional, but it makes it so that I can't even begin to figure out how to listen to it.

From a production standpoint, there are the aforementioned EQ problems, but it's also compressed to high hell and still clipping.

Just had a listen, drums need to be louder and harder, could also do with getting rid of that annoying shaker at the start, sounds really distorted and hurts my ears. The one massive problem I have with the track is that it doesn't have a sense of atmosphere and a lack of space as it were. Try adding touches of reverb to the snare or some of the synths, could help the track out. Like the idea though but keep on working on it.

one time, about 12 years ago I sent some tunes to a label

the guy came back and told me "this is shit, you cant dance to this, there is no bass... DON'T EVER WASTE MY TIME AGAIN!"

I was pretty pissed off for about 10-15 minutes... my pride was hurt, my ego had been scarred...

but the guy was right... I wwnt back to the drawing board and I made tunes that were danceable... etc

looking back, that guy did me a massive favor

If you to respond to constructive criticism by saying things like:

I think you're thinking too deeply about it, especially in a genre like dubstep, where there are no set rules. I do whatever sounds effective.

People are probably going to bother trying to help you less often and just start saying "its shit" more often.

Bro, you're going to have to trust your ears. You say you're your own worst critic, but that is apparently not true. Listen to your track in between two similar released tracks. LISTEN. See what works for one, but maybe not the other.

It's something you will have to face all the time if you want to even thionk of making a go of music at all. People don't like things. Wouldn't you rather have someone be striaght with you?

On AIM in the past, I had a person off DSF send me some music. Randomly too, which is not cool imo. I listened and gave proper feedback. I got a torrent of abuse back. "How dare you, I have labels fighting over me right now" Proper mug. Learn to take criticism in every shape and form and learn to do it like a professional. Otherwise you won't be going anywhere.

I understand you might be saying that to be nice or whatever but I doubt that's the case. Rather, 90% of the time people are saying its shit, because it is. If its well done most people are adult to say so.



Harsh criticism is a reality of the producers learning curve. Nobody starts off making beats like Mala (actually Mala probably did) so if you're gonna try this game and let people hear your stuff there's got to be an expectation that people will think you're shit. Because we all have been at one point, or still are.. I place myself in the second category
