The future of dubstep

Post by WhorQ »

There is an ever increasing divide in the scene: the main being between 'The Filth competition' and the more progressive side of the scene, incorporating elements of house, techno and electro into the music (I really do hope that labels such as hyperdub and tectonic will not be known as 'progstep' in the future:P)
Plus, the offshoot of ragga-blended, more dub focussed dubstep, which has existed for a number of years (which i dont think will influence the scene greatly)

My predictions: the heavy dubstep will continue, without changing a great deal eventually growing stale (echoing the past of drum & bass) whereas the prog side of things will branch out and evolve into a separate scene.

What ya sayin guys?

It's interesting that you don't mention UK Funky at all, WhorQ

Is it just me, or is it largely the American scene that is bringing the heavy tunes?

It is quite possible that the heavy and deep splinter further apart, but I think 'wonky' will be the most interesting subsection of the scene in the next year or two.

The future of dubstep is to go in every possible direction, there is such a wide range of producers.
I think the 'trademark dubstep sound' is the filthy stuff so that will become bigger and bigger amongst young people.
The Dub stuff will still continue as it is and develop a strong fan base.
The liquid stuff will be used in other genres.

Dubstep will put on weight, get progressively grumpier and run off with a young bit of fluff

I think its gonna be a big year for those who are into subgenrestep. For the rest of us I predict there will be lots of listening to music.

I think dubstep is in rude health going into 2010. As long as people dont start trying to pin it down and segregate it, it will continue to prosper and evolve as it has been doing.

I just hope that the dialogue between the different facets of dubstep doesn't stop as people try and give every new thing a different name. Dubstep's main ally is the vagueness of its definition

why are people so worried about segregation though? eventually people are gonna want to know what kind of night they're going to, whether it's lairy brostep, deep medi-style dubs, or glitchy wonky spaz-out things. Or whatever else there is.

It happened to both techno and jungle, and I can't say it was for the worse. Sure, it might cause a lot of people to end up just writing the same thing thinking that [x]step should go like *this*, but then it might also introduce a whole bunch of people to sounds nobody's really heard before, with more nights representing post-glitchdubfunkstep or whatever, rather than just dubstep night after dubstep night
