naw srsly Melbourne has a big scene but i'm being biased.

best/most fun part of Australia?

excellent weather, beaches, women, plenty of beer and sport and music, crazy native animals, food/produce is sensational, nice people, plenty to see/do, fairly cheap if you know where to look.

what exactly are your interests?

Sydney's the closest thing you'll get to an 'international' city like New York or London. As such, the cost of living is highest there. It's also the most crowded part of the country. If you like a fast-paced lifestyle, this is probably the place for you.

Melbourne is renowned for it's art and independent music scene. It's a really nice city, and much more affordable than Sydney.

I can't comment on Melbourne's dubstep scene, as I'm from Sydney, but I do hear there's a bit going on there. In Sydney we have the Index & Void club nights, which attract international artists (In recent months we've had Appleblim, Skream & Benga, 2562, Emalkay, etc) The Gaslamp Killer will be here this weekend, and Shackleton will be playing next month. Mark Pritchard (aka Harmonic 313) is a resident at Void.
There are lots of other small club nights in and around Sydney that have dubstep and other related bass music (dnb, jungle, grime, etc). If you're on Facebook, these events shouldn't be too hard to find.

What do you mean 'fun'? What other things are you interested in doing/seeing whilst here?

There is a slight anti-American sentiment, but if you're friendly, people will welcome you.

Scubadiving is best up in Queensland, but there are good beaches all over the place and plenty of opportunity for fishing/nature-related stuff everywhere.

The lebanese thing happened at beachside where i come from.
There was long term macho shit
coming from a certain sector of aussie-lebs who have cultural issues.
Eventually skip surfers & ring-in racists got upset, drunk, cowardly & went overboard with resentment

storm in a teacup
that has helped awareness

lots of respected people with lebanese blood here

as for your question

lots of good universities including in big east-coast regional cities like Lismore, Wagga, Cairns
Each state capital has at least 2 excellent unis + lots of other educational institutions
suggest google Universities Admission Centre

as for ds:
Brisbane has nice scene...core steppas, still has community, not a lot of internationals lately
Sydney locals have largely gone hardstyle...difficult to find a night of skanky ds even with lots of internationals coming thru. The newbs are calling the tune.
Canberra's still got garage/2-step/liquid heads but it's underground & mixed with junglists.
Melbourne & Adelaide have healthy scenes with some of best producers, slowly growing.
Perth is atuned to Blighty & seems progressive & active.

But beyond that peebs wouldn't have a clue about ds.
