i got turned on to this whole uk bass thing not too long ago.. first time i heard it (some remix of "breathe"), i was pretty in shock, && then i heard the "darker" side (mala, joker, was esp. impressed by coki and some stuff by skream). needless to say, i was totally hooked on the sound.. altho not enough to leave crunk behind

i've been playin around with dubstep beats and basslines and mixin them with some crunk style (i.e. space, hard triplets, bass drums > basslines). i was wonderin what you guys opinion is on this and the future of club-oriented hip-hop && dubstep together.

basically im not askin for any technical tips or whatever, more of mentality: wat are the hurdles of tackling a dubstep-style production when coming from a hip-hop background? wat kind of fundamental differences are we looking at between the two? just curious wat you guys think..

im pretty much in the same boat you are. I come from a hip hop /jungle / dnb background. I think the crunk and the dubstep would blend nicely. Have you gotten a dj to 'test' out one of your tracks in a club? what was the crowd reaction?

juke n jit! i've done some work in the dc area so i've heard a pretty good amount, but not quite.. juke is so much more uptempo! i've been at juke nights where it almost sounded like gabber! how has that been incorporating into the scene over there?? i can't imagine how juke works outside of its natural habitat..

checked out pantyraid, realized i already had some of their material.. i'd been playin out that "do you" remix every once in a while b2b w/ the joker one was not a huge fan of some of their other stuff, reminded me more of glitch than crunk for sum reason haha

propa tingz is pretty interestin but i see minimal crunk instead of hype as bein the best for this mixture - here are some great instrumentals that i hear the most potential for cuttin w/ dubstep:





"crunkstep" i never listened to much jungle or dnb, breaks have never been a huge turn-on for me i love syncopation tho and there's a lot that i hear in a track by sumone like benga that i'd love to see incorporated over here && vice versa..

i DJ out myself, i've got some interesting reactions.. my fav venue to play around here is actually a dude's basement, && he has a sick rig & great blowed vibes so the crowd is all over it. in more conventional clubs it's been difficult to gauge, i think mostly due to the fact that there's no real apparent audience in the dfw area aside from the dub assembly crowd (i could be wrong, i haven't spent much time actuvely pursuin the scene).

i just see that bare-bones 808 trappin sound mixed w/ slow, heavy dubstep vibes as being impossibly darker than either by themselves.. who knos??? this is the best example i've heard so far of what i'm thinkin, but really, much darker than that even: http://hypem.com/track/1012413/Gucci+Ma ... mby+Remix+

i think hiphop and dubstep are very closely corrolated. similar tempo ranges, emphasis on broken beat patterns and heavy bass. both have basic formulas that are very adaptable and can take on many different forms. i see a lot of room for crossover between the two, esp on the chiller side of the genre. i can see hiphop incorporating a lot more interesting sub bass, and a lot of deeper tracks leave a lot of open space for an mc. that zomby remix a great example, i love the combo of the plinky synth line and the heavy ass drums and 808s.

i think it has become pretty clear over the last 4 years that crunk and dubstep are closely related and in fact maybe too closely related as blending the two is a bit like cousins having babies...

the biggest thing to do is move away from using that 808 sound for the bass (or at least learn how to program a synth to make this sound for you rather than a drum machine or sample), and focus on the things that have made hiphop fun: catchy melodies, inspiring rhythms, the occasional meaningful subject matter.

also, probably don't need to bother yourself with learning how to do aggro bass wobbles,,,

i would love to hear some crunky dubstep, and in my opinion i can see many crunk influences in dubstep. i dont know if i would want it to be in a club type scene. I've always loved going to shows because of the darkness, the crowd and watchin the dj, and of course the system. idk if dub would have the same effect in clubs nah mean
