reggae beat with FL 7

Does anyone know what instrument I can use on Fruity loops to make the classic plucking sound found in all reggae songs? all of the sytrus plucked instruments sound terrible.

No, i think he means its a classic sample, and you can grab it out of nearly any old reggae tune, timestretch, pitchcorrect, envelope the whole thing too make it a smooth hit, n bam! Guitar one shots.

i knew that answer would pop up before an explanation of how to go about recreating the sound (even though OP hasnt said what he wants to do yet)

i dont know about FL but i made a very basic dub guitar sounding synth with thor in reason the other day

But the thing is, he specifically asked for the one everyone else uses. No secret. it was probably sampled n not synthed in all those tunes hes heard it in. Honestly, id tell you too find someone with an electric with some nice thin ernie ball strings or something and just smack a couple of Gs n C strums out, n record that shit...

FL does have aguitar emulating synth though you know... I still say sampling it from an old classic or recording it yourself ftw...

ive made some very convincing dub sounds myself lately and im far happier knowing i took the time to learn rather than take the easy option

do a search for reggae sample pack theres a popular one flying about with loads of classic samples

You can either spend weeks, months on trying to copy the sound using software or you can download a pack that has 50 original sample hits in it and crack on making a track.

Could just use a piano with effects. Thats all it is a lot of the time.. experiment with phaser/reverb/delay

if you are looking for plucks.. i.e. palm-muted guitar .. try the FL Slayer plugin .. I know on FL 5 there is a Slayer preset called 'FX sunshine reggae' that is pretty close to what you might be looking for.. try playing with the 'slap' and 'fret' or the amp settings to suit..

Thanks for all the help dudes, I ended up downloading a plug in called ravity, which has some great plucked guitar. Here is w[hat I ended up with.

If you what to use guitar skanks, I recommend finding a sample pack of containing each chord (e.g. e minor, e major, f minor f major etc), the reason being that depending on which chords you want your skank to be, pitching up and down a sample might not work. There is a pack somewhere on the net which I found a while ago, which has both full skanks and muted skanks.

The ones you made sound ok too, though I would process them a little bit more..

The other thing is to use piano or keyboard sounds, these can sound awesome, and you can easily make them with FL keys or whatever

i recommend you find some tutorials and learn how to make the sounds.

vst's that do the job for you and sample packs everyone is using is just waste

I think maybe they stand out a bit in the mix too, you could possibly turn them down a little bit so they don't dominate so much... As for processing, maybe add a bit of distortion to them to "fuzz" them up a bit, they sound a bit raw if you know what I mean. Just try a few different things out and see what makes them sound a bit more organic. You could try the same with the piano chords too.

As for using samples, I think it's fine to use generic samples, particularly for such a common sound as reggae skank. I hardly think anyone's going to go "hey, I've heard that exact reggae skank before! this track is crap!". On the contrary, when I'm making something dubby I often want that classic sound.

yea i know what you are saying, but great results can also be achieved with many different synths too

i just think its far more rewarding to take that little extra time to learn how something can be made

like i said, i achieved a pretty bloody sweet sounding dub guitar from scratch in reason the other day with minimum effort
