Half Life 2

Post by djacroama » Sun Mar 07, 2010 7:08 pm

just coped The Orange Box again after loosing my original copy and completely forgot how amazing Half Life 2 actually is. I played through the first half life many moons ago and loved it but i never really felt immersed in the world. Half Life 2 manages to do this from the second you enter the game.

The amount of detail in the world is amazing, everyone seems to be doing something and the combine chatter makes it seems like they are watching you. There's this one moment right at the beginning of the game where a guard blocks you path and knocks a can off a bin and tells you to put it in the bin. i found that picking the can up and throwing it at him made for an interesting reaction (as well as an achievement).

There is soooo much atmosphere in this game and at times i found myself playing quite literally on the edge of my seat.

The story is mental as well, quite an original story in an all to real setting. Cant help thinking there's some sort of hidden message in there though.

Also, i love the "G Man" (as he has become known as). Something really, really creepy about him

Cant wait for the third episode to come out later this year, hopefully would have completed it just in time for the release

Best shoot em up ever innit.

Doom 3 was fucking sick as well. I genuinely wouldnt play that game on my own after dark unless all my lights were on and there were some happy tunes playing in the background.

Episode 3 hasn't been confirmed for this year IIRC.

I'm super hyped for Steam (and hopefully Team Fortress 2) for Mac though!!! :D :D :D :D

I cant say I've heard anything about Ep3 this year either.

However Valve did confirm the other day Portal 2 is out "late 2010", and that its also going to be a full release, not just a bonus game.

yeah i loved it, amazing atmosphere. the only thing that pissed me off a bit was all long bits where you are driving a vehicle. guess it broke up the game play though.

Never finished it, thought it was kinda shit tbh. Portal was sick though.

But then I spose I only played it when orange box came around so I must of missed the hype of it being new and original, just thought it was boring.

I sort of got that they had a physics engine though, they didnt need to show me by giving me endless fucking "put a weight here" puzzles.

For me the reason HL 1 was superior was just the overall atmosphere
you're just a normal scientist rather than a figurehead of the resistance
Black mesa was in the middle of nowhere and the vibe was quite lonely - any friendly encounters were brief
There are points in HL2 where you get the same vibe but it wasn't consistent
the linear level design was perfect for the setting in HL1 and had the best pacing of any game I've played
Its almost as if they rush you through HL2

HL2 & HL are next level games for their times.

I'm still on TF2 near daily and have been replaying HL & HL2 over the past year.

Top notch gaming.
