Dj's getting sent tunes

Was just wondering how many tunes the big dj's get sent?

Do you think with the amount they get sent through drop boxes emails etc that there must be some really good tunes that just don't get listened to and will never get picked up or see the light of day.

Im sure equally there is so much crap that gets sent it could put someone off going through all the stuff they get sent, it could be frustrating when you think you have a potential big track and its not even getting listened to.

I believe that to be the case also, i wonder how many artists actually get the exposure that have no connections?

yeah your probably right. it always helps to have the connections though!

you can be sure that the biggest DJs are probably getting well over 1000 tunes a week.

your best bet is to get someone talking you up - you might not be able to get your tunes to (say) Caspa, but if you can get someone who's signed to Dub Police shouting about your stuff, he's likely to listen to them and might get it that way. so keep hustling

it's all about building really, the more you get your tunes to DJs lower down the totem pole (who don't get so many promos, and are therefore more likely to play them if they're good), the more exposure you'll get in clubs and radio which gets people talking... it means you get your shit played in a public forum and the DJs get something exclusive that other people won't have (an incentive to play something in itself)...

what i'm basically saying is send me loads of stuff.

Dont agree with this fully, even if its amazing but due to all the crap dj's are getting sent, why are they going to bother checking it.

Im still convinced imo that its jobs for the boys, which is cool in a way because they dont have to sift through the crap, if it comes from a good source they know and trust then happy days.

I have sent bits off as private tracks on soundcloud and they havent even received one play, but my main reason for posting was just because of a conversation with a mate about how many wicked tunes must slip through the net because of these reasons.

All these big names get 100's of tunes sent & they most likely only ever listen to the ones by names that they have already heard of

This prompts the question, Can these people actually have any love for the scene if they are purposely ignoring submissions from new producers in order to keep their tracklists to the usual suspects?

for instance certain dj's are gulity of having similar tracklists on every set...
(ie
coki - dub
mala - dub
skream - dub
benga - dub)

basiclly not having any interest in anybody elses tunes getting heard.

Other big named dj's actually do look into other producers & support them. This makes these dj's stand head & shoulders above the rest (at least imo).

what amount of work does a dj have to do, when they get sent all their tunes to an inbox somewhere, & they already know before listening to any of the tunes, which ones they are gonna play?

My hat goes off to the DJ's who happily listen to all submissions & play all of the tunes which they are feeling. Their sets are a lot more interesting to listen to than the ones who are lazy

Some good points made there, i also believe there is room for the usual suspects tunes and some unknown bits to be put in sets by the big dj's.

But i still feel they must get a bit demoralised listening to all the crap they get sent, or is it their duty/obligation to sift through it and find the gems?

Would be interesting to hear some opinions of the big dj's who use this forum..

the reason why its hard to get exposure these days is because dubstep is going in the direction o dnb.....not in a bad way. i mean its getting to the point where you have the handful of big names in the seen, the ones with the record labels and such, the ones who run the show, (ie mala skream kode9 etc).....

the reason why its hard to get noticed is becuase the artists who get sent tunes notice the artists name first before listening to the tune, if its someone they recognize they can automatically assume it should be good so they listen


coming up in the scene these days is much harder, back in 05 and even before that getting noticed was fairly easy considering how many artists there were back then,

theres this interview where TROLLEY SNATCHA says that in 2005 when he started making dubstep, CASPA messaged him on myspace saying he liked his tunes, and the rest is history......a situation like that can't happen in todays age considering all the shit that the dj's online have to deal with, like hundreds of soundclouds getting sent to them everyday

im not saying sack off the big names & only play tunes from up & comers.
That would be stupid.

What i'm saying is, its the duty of people at the top of the scene, to look after the up & comers, because once these up & comers get to the top the big names will naturally want in on their tunes ect.

Part of the job of these top dj's is to nurture new talent & help them achieve their goals. not only for the benefit of the up comers, but also for the fact that most A list dj's are tied to a label & they should be watching new talent for this reason as well.

It shouldn't be left up to the up-comers to expose their selves, because most up-comers don't know how to.

isit acceptable to stop working once you get to the top? some people might think so, but from my perspective that's unacceptable. The people who are getting paid huge amounts for money for sets should be working just as hard, if not harder to expose new producers/labels/talent in general

after all, if you ignore certain names from the start, how can you expect those names to hook you up when they get bigger?

moral is.... A good tune is a good tune, regardless of who made it.

it shouldnt be about the same 10 names constantly promoting each other. once the big money comes in ofcourse theyre gonna be looking after their interests. if x has a track coming out on y's label why wouldnt x play y's dub thats due for release on x's label in the summer. its business.

Alternately, great tunes come out all the time and don't get the hype that some shit tunes on major labels get out of simple connections with reviewers and such.

Just part of the game.
