Re: How do you keep up-to-date with the dubstep scene?
i didn't start making real progress into electronic music/dubstep until i started listening to dj sets. your exposed to a lot of new artists and forthcoming material, and you can hear which tunes are being played out and how they fit into live sets.
but really, its called researchin'
when u hear something u like find out who it is and get your hands on whatever u can. went from only 50 songs to 18 gigs in 3 months

Re: How do you keep up-to-date with the dubstep scene?
I don't.
A large amount of dubstep is shit nowadays; the real interesting part of the music comes in the massive grey area between dubstep, techno, garage, uk funky, wonky, minimal, digidub, grime, electro, etc. We have a nearly limitless palette to use in a genre that accepts it, so I find it really hard to just follow it as a scene...instead I just listen to a lot of music I like and incorporate it into my own.

See that bigass list of mods? Listen to their mixes and radio shows. Joe Nice's monthly gourmetbeats show is always an intro to that-which-will-be-caned. Boomnoise's too.
And don't forget maryanne hobbs, rinse fm, etc, etc.
For me, I luckily get sent wicked tunes

I'll be honest, this shit is just so saturated now. I remember waiting on 2 or 3 vinyl releases a week. Almost everything went through this site for the first year or so. Now I feel like I am the last to know sometimes. My world revolves around myself these days
I just don't have the time at all anymore. Would love to listen to more mixes, follow a few shows but I am just busy, busy, busy with sleep in between.

I don't really... I've never kept up to date with any genre actually. I'm also sick of the 'genre' to be honest, I'm starting to make random stuff that I don't particularly worry about (whether people will like it, etc), just taking the whole thing less seriously. I think it was silly to take it seriously in the first place

Re: How do you keep up-to-date with the dubstep scene?
I can respect that. I have always wanted to get to that point where I don't think "genre" when I sit down to produce but I have gotten caught up in this thing. It is something that is kinda bothering me right now. I have always been a loner basically but now that I run a label I have to take care of everyone else first, me second. Starting to sound like a rant and OT at that so I will quit lol The point is I think the genre thing is fading. And I hope it does fade. The music will be better for it imo.grooki wrote:I don't really... I've never kept up to date with any genre actually. I don't really bother keeping up to date.
I'd rather have a brilliant song from 1492 than an average song released yesterday you dig brah?

Re: How do you keep up-to-date with the dubstep scene?
Spend a few hours finding a variety of quality dubstep blogs, sites and zines and subscribe to their RSS feeds. I use Google Reader which I have found it to be the easiest to use. I'm into a variety of genres, so each collection of blogs has labels in my reader. I also subscribe to production and sample blogs. While nerdy, RSS feeds and readers save you a ton of time because you can quickly view content from a variety of sites from one window. A reader will also show you content you have read and new post. Most quality dubstep blogs post a variety of tunes, mixes, interviews ect. Another benefit of Google Reader is that you can access it from anywhere and don't have to worry about having bookmarks.

I don't DJ so this doesn't apply to me but I see your point there.Basic A wrote:Nah, because Ive only ever heard like maybe 50 amazing tunes ever, lol, and if I rinsed those, id be considered a pretty shit DJ.dr-zitbag wrote:I don't really bother keeping up to date.

Realistically there a quite a few good songs out at the moment, but nothing really stands out to me.
And as mentioned above I'm quite sick of genre restraints, I listen to a song i like on youtube, i see a gazzillion comments saying: This isn't dubstep.
I don't care for genres, if the song puts me in a happy place then i thrive upon it
Bass is love.
Re: How do you keep up-to-date with the dubstep scene?
I dont really try keep upto date. I play what i like to play, and like to listen to new artists and labels.
Im not one to jump on the latest promo bandwagon. If i like a release i will buy, but i will mostly listen to 100 or more tracks before deciding what i want to buy

Re: How do you keep up-to-date with the dubstep scene?
dont really, and the stuff that interests me the most from the scene is at best only arguably dubstep really (bar kryptic minds and that kind of vibe)
i just like the whole half step 140bpm thing, coming from 170+ chopped breaks its a really nice change and is so much nicer to work with, gives you loads more freedom to do cool stuff.
