Did you know....

Writing in all caps makes thing much more difficult to read? The human eye relies quite heavily on the difference in position and size of the letters so that they can be read quickly and easily. TYPING IN ALL CAPS MAKES THEM ALL THE SAME SIZE, SO THEY ARE MUCH HARDER TO READ which kind of negates the point in 'shouting' in all caps in the first place.

Cool, eh?

Surgeon is well known for being a dubstep fan, especially of Vex'd.

Jamie has done a remix of one of Surgeon's new tunes which is off the hook.

Surgeon's new stuff is showing some dubstep influence - we just got his remix of the new Black Dog single off him, it rocks, and it has some serious low end action in it.

I saw Surgeon a few weeks ago and he played Vex'd's Lion or Gunman i think. Sounded good in the mix with the techno.

Is it the same Surgeon who did a single for Soma (got it at home, know it's got a tune called Brownian Motion on it - might be on Soma). The A-side's well ectic (loads of those wierd Dave Clark backwards noises) - tried to mix it into dubstep and it sounded pretty cool.
Hmm....

Not me man, that whole remix is Roly. And to be honest, Rolz has single-handedly written some of our best shit (crusher dub, killing floor). good old roly..

Ah, my mistake.

Kicking remix innit.

There's quite a few techno people playing with dubstep bass on 4x4 beats - same time as dubstep people are playing with 4x4 beats - crossover soon come...

Surgeon makes what's known as broken-beat techno (not to be confused with that straight up jazzy broken beat type stuff). Lots of producers from the birmingham area make this type of techno. Surgeon, Regis, Female, Makaton, Paul Bailey, 65d mavericks, Inigo Kennedy. Other Broken Beat strongholds include Slovakia (which is home to producers Olga + Jozef, Rumenige and Loktibrada, Supagrupa, Hu and Zvedka Podopva) and Madrid (Oscar Mulero, Christian Wuensch, Exium, Oscar Mulero, Luka Baumann, Archae and Grovskopa). For the last age I've been dying to put together a mix with Dubstep and Broken beat tunes for several reasons, but have been unable to due to my dex not being at uni with me. There are several similarities, or at least formal qualities, which I feel would make a good mix between the two genre's. Firstly they both have irregular drum patterns. Broken beat is to clubby techno what dubstep is to grime in turns of rhythmic variation. secondly, and more specifically addressing rhythm, the way the kickdrums would relate to each other between dubstep and broken beat tracks would provide fertile territory in the mix. And finally, I have started to noticed a more abrasive quality to the tonality of some dubstep tunes with hard, metalic washes of sound rolling through some of the tunes, Most notably 'Armour' by Iron Man on Tectonic. This corresponds quite nicely to the spooky atmospherics on lots of broken beat tracks. If any other heads who are into both genres have any thoughts on this matter I would be grateful to hear them. I feel surgeon has started a dialogue that could be quite fruitfully entered into between techno heads of a specific orientation and dubsteppers.
