Last saturday Dbridge, Instra:mental SP:MC and DISTANCE were down to play at Custard Factory in Birmingham, Autonomic special, Distances first time ever playing in Birmingham. Ive seen distance before at DMZ and Outlook, but ive been waiting for over 3 years to see him play in Brum.

The night completely flopped, I mean at its peak, around 12:30, there was probably 50 people spread across 2 rooms and outside. Dbridge turned up (eventually) and him and SP smashed it, even though there was barley anyone in the room, respect to them for that. Instra:mental and Distance however didn't show (probably because they were told not to bother) and the night was locked off at about 3 - 3:30.

Now down the road on the same night, Datsik was playing alongside some locals, this night was apparently rammed (and ive seen pics as evidence).

This is symptomatic of what has happened to the sound (especially in Brum) when someone like Datsik can bring in a massive crowd, but Distance, a pioneer in this genre, and a pioneer of the aggy side of things (without distance there is no Datsik imo) brings in 0 people!

It absolutely baffles me, what has happened??? Distance should be bringing in a few hundred people at least just on his own, let alone with Dbridge and Instra:mental playing and the night being part of the club autonomic tour (some of the best and most forward thinking 170 in years).

To me its a matter of timing, it seems the vast majority of people who started listening to dubstep in late 08 - present will be into the circus records type thing, whereas before that threshold, the more sub-low orientated styles are perfered (obviously this is a general case). Birmingham only took off with dubstep around this time period, so its just gone completely down that route to the point where the other side of the spectrum is so under represented and under supported its unbelievable! Nights that even a year ago would get a decent turn out just die now.

I still love 'dubstep' but im increasingly finding it hard to go to a night that I enjoy from start to finish like I used to. Even DMZ 5th birthday was somewhat disappointing (other than DMZ & Loefah and last bit of Pinch and Distance that i caught) I guess its just bad luck that the most popular style of dubstep is a style that i dont like to listen to.

i would have been at distance, instra:mental & Dbridge any day!!! i would rather sit at home on my own than go to Datsik aha, but i know what you mean, it happened the other week with a dnb night i went to. the line up was Black Sun Empire, Unknown Error, B-key and a few others, the night at its peak only had about 100 people in the room, i was thinking how can these guys not pull a big crowd. . . i just left before the end because unknown error and b-key didnt even turn up

Interesting you mention the Distance/ Datsik thing- they are both playing at an event in the states next month, and Datsik is getting top billing.

Seems ignorant and appalling to me but its not my party... big up the crew bringing them out, I'm just sayin, have some respect for the people who built this.

same shit happened when loefah played at the rainbow warehouse, was pretty damn empty considering the copious amounts of tuneage this guy has put out, and his status within the scene.
which isnt necessarily a bad thing, but if shit like this happens then promoters arnt gonna book the deeper more pioneering djs because theres always that chance that no fuckers gonna turn up on that night.

Im not bothered about the other night getting a good turn out, fair play to Dave and Carlos who organised the night, im pleased it went well for them, its just there should be enough people (like me) who would much prefer to go to see Distance (and dbridge, intra:mental and SP) than Datsik to get a decent turnout at both nights.

There was nothing on in London that night... So i drove up to see distance, d-bridge and instra:mental... when i got to the custard factory i was greeted by a security guard who directed me a touch further down the road where a sign was hung reading "Cream Classics.." £20.00 entry... thought this was just about the most expensive dubstep night ive been to... then it hit me... it was all locked off.

Shameful and unsatisfying drive back to London.

i don't think that i have lost any love for dubstep, but that i have no love, i've never had much love, for what 'dubstep' means nowadays.

i'm feeling a lot more stuff from the 135 // funky // whatever crew than i am from anyone soley producing 'dubstep' at the mo. music moves and changes, the climate in which the oldschool good dubstep flourished has gone now, and, though i don't really have that much of a problem with the mad wobble/rave step stuff, it is very silly and just not my thing.

so i would say that there still is amazing music being made, loads of it, around the 130-140 range, but i don't know whether it should really be labelled as dubstep.

like all that autonomic-esque 170 stuff, it's not really dnb, it's just another exploration of that tempo range. same with all the 130/135 stuff.

dubstep has split into many different styles and is constantly evolving;
that being said, no-one is going to appreciate every single style.

personally, I have a pretty varied taste. love alot of the tunes Datsik and Borgore are putting out, just as much as Im feeling Ikonika, Untold, and Scuba.
whenever I go out to a night thats playing deep sub-weight, Im skankin. whenever Im at a tearout night, Im skankin. but I do realize that not everyones gonna appreciate everything like I do.

my solution? fuck a scene, fuck all this brostep-nostep nonsense everyone is blabbing about. if it's good music, then I'll appreciate it.

a big thing to remember is that a lot of people just plain out don't have subwoofers... they might hear some Pangaea and look right by it because it just doesn't make sense over laptop speakers.

I'd never thought about that.....Makes sense.

Next time I send someone a youtube link I shall stipulate that they can't listen to it on Laptop speakers.

nice thread..... sort of reminds me a little of what happened to dnb...... i still like some of it, but in a weird "I dont want to be associated with it anymore" way.

But in a way the tearout needs to be done... thats what a lot of people are paying for anyways. Depending on the crowd of course. Where it gets me lost is when I walk in to a club at 11 pm and theres "beatport 10" blairing from the system. save the biggest and busiest tunes towards the end of the night. A good night is about progression and dynamics, not the lack of it.

this upsets me so much
my mate went to datsik and i wanted to punch him there and then when he told me. he doesnt know much about dubstep, and i told him to go to the breakthru Distance etc night.
he came back to tell me it was rammed but the music was shit. so im glad i got some sense into him.
i think the problem with the distance night tho, was it wasnt very well advertised, i only knew about it that week where as i knew about datsik months in advance.


just as a personal 'rebellion' i might just play dark, dark tunes that noone can dance to this saturday at the custard factory

I have no sub. I discovered dubstep through excision/datsik - boom. Honestly, I do still like the harder stuff, and not having decent sub makes it really hard to get myself to listen to the deeper stuff. But I keep buying the deep, blasting it in my car, and I'm thankful for it, cuz Mala is a badman. Guess I gotta say... Iono. Be open to styles, listen to what you like, and fuck the haters I really don't think the deeper guys will ever lose their solid fanbase, so there's no real worry.

That's not good ! Ofcourse a night flops when 2 dj's booked don't play. Ok, 50 people isn't much, but probably those 50 people are 'real' dubsteppers. Not good from Distance and Instra:mental, if I was there I would be very angry on them and disappointed. The greatest musicians play their thing like planned for the die-hards who took the effort to turn up !!!

My love with dubstep isn't over, and it probably never will. But I listen just to stuff I want to listen to and I try to discover much, not stricted to dubstep btw.
