Hey!
Ye I do this from time to time, its good to learn the ins and outs of a particular synth. Once you learn the synth, you can build up your own patches, so you can bring up a patch in a track instantly, instead of making it from scratch each time u need a new synth sound, and u can also adjust the patch to suit the track your working on etc... (Presets are usually pretty shit depending on what synth your using. I hardly ever use just a preset, I sometimes find a preset I like and tweek the sound, but usually I make the sound from scratch myself)
Deffo do this dude! its well worth it for knowledge of synthesis, and also it can help with your workflow when your feeling inspired etc....

Edit - I do it track by track aswell tho, but this can come in very handy if there's a sound you want that you've already made ;)

It can also help the dreaded 'Writers Block' :2:
Fingers crossed, I haven't had that in a while lol.
Good luck dude!

yeah i do. just don't spend like two hours profecting one sound. work really fast and save very often. so then you can open them up when making tracks and you can get them just right once the tune is done. i try to make adout 10-30 patchs in about a hour sesh.

I spent a good 2-3 weeks on a patch onetime... glad I did really...

Its fun man, slap a rcorder on your master channel and go nuts... you dont have to be sneible, everything can be diced up and fit it later, youll get anything from crazy persussion/incidentals to full blow synth pathces...

Always, alwyas gotta be experimenting, doesnt always mean your making anytihng your ever gonnna use, but, youll get somewhere, and learn alot.

I've just spent about 6 months doing nothing but sound design and some drum programming.

Time to make some fookin tracks. Watch this space.

Honestly I don't think I have ever even saved a patch before  Not saying there is anything wrong with working like that tbh I probably should just have a day of making patches sometime. I usually just want to make tunes when I am in the studio tho.

Sound design is why I love dubstep so much. Personally I prefer to only use my own sounds, aside from drums, I use samples. But making sounds is the most fun for me personally.

occasionally i do, but normally i do sound design as the track requires. often i end up with sounds i dont use that way, which get saved and recycled if possible.

i find pure sound design sessions tend to be a bit directionless though, i find it much better when i have a vague idea of what i am trying to achieve, rather than just buggering about with noises.

this. i'm currently trying to make patches from scratch & i find it hard to just make summat out of nothing. i'm not good enough at sound design yet to be able to whip up a great synth or bass sound from the air. i need a bit of direction & even then i may not get the sound i want for a long time if i even do get there. but i'll stumble across a few sounds in the meantime that i can save for later. a couple of weeks ago i had a major pc crash which put me out of music production for about a month. it had been about 3 months before the crash that i had continuously worked on music so the time off somewhat killed the roll i was on. so i suppose i'm still trying to find my feet atm.

on a related note, does anyone have great tips & tutorials for learning & improving on sound design from their own experience? i'm sure a lot of people who are reading this thread aren't sound design masters & any advice we can find is greatly appreciated. everyone has their own way of sound designing so it would be interesting to see the different techniques.

I do, actually. Not days, but sometimes it's good if you have a writers block, to just do some preparations for coming tunes. Saves me a lot of time.

I'll only spend time on sound design if the tracks almost done and I feel like its a good one. Completely kills the vibe if you're spending too long on 'sound design' when you're trying to get a track down.

see the joys of having hardware... when my pc was dead and i was jobless to repair it i spent days just building patches on my synths and sampling and tweaking shit on my gear till i had a sequencer avail again. why i'm grabbing an old floppy based midi hardware sequencer for live pa and if that ever happens again

Prolly 90 percent no. I do sometimes go off the deep end with a sound or a loop, usually more than a synth patch, but a synth patch with fx and all kinds of manipulation. The product of that will go to wave, for further potential use. Often time those sounds/loops are so rich they can't work with something else, and yet are not full enough to hold up a track on their own, thus ending up in a dusty folder.

Usually make sounds as they are required. I'm no great synthesist, though, so I usually spend a lot of time working on actual sounds as I'm working on beats. But for me, I start totally fresh each time, no template files, no template samples, synths, etc.

In the past I usually started with a drum beat, but lately I've been starting with sound design, to make a pad or a bass, and then building up into drums from there. Seems to be working better for me.

If you bring a couple of elements together, they'll usually dictate a third element which dictates a fourth, so on and so forth. The sounds control my beats.
