dubstep is just 50 million different types of sets now.

whats wrong with diversity? u cant play the same kind of set at every event/room, but u still want to play dubstep, so just play tunes u like. whats the big deal?

I think this music, electronic or otherwise, just evolves and grows. Everyone loved HipHop when it was new, but now that it's so saturated, and everyone's creativity is getting less and less, people lose interest. I see the same thing happening in Dubstep ( and really all types of music ). When it all starts sounding the same, what do you do?

personally, I think the key is to mix things up, blend, try different things, think and create outside the box!
Believe me, I'm saying this in a humble way, not like I have completely figured it all out, but to the mainstream crowd at least in the US, they still haven't even heard dubstep. They call it Techno! hahaha! anything electronic is still called Tecno out here, or Rave music! (by people not in the scene who never heard of bassnectar, or skream, or rusko etc)

I have mad respect for those who try and mix music outside of their genre or scene, because it forces people to live outside of their comfort zones, and thinking.
Anyway, just my two cents on it. I'm still in love with dubstep, and with all these styles. It's like sex, if you get tired of missionary position, flip her over and hit it from the back!!!!hahahah! :)
One love

the deal i spous is the fact that these 'bandwagon kids' just want all this formulated 'wobblestep' (cant think of a better word) and dubstep is now percieved as something horribly different to what it used to be and is starting to be represented by artists that really, lets be honest, don't compare to some of the greats that have been here from the start and guys like the hessle and hemlock crews.
BOOMsHaNKA!an interception!

My faith got a little boost, there are people out there that still like good music. This was also a very student dominated crowd, so to be fair you cant really say they are ALL just into aggy.
mate! i felt like a bit of a dick when i missed you're set. I arrived at like 11:30, so turns out i actually caught the last bit of your set :D sounded pretty tight man.
Cheers man, appreciate it. The last 45 mins of my set were pretty hectic! all my tunes were out there sleeves and i was frantically searching through my box for ones i hadn't played! Wasnt prepared for a mammoth set!
kwun-tings wrote:I got moved to 2:30-3:30, and i was SO SO SO fucking annoyed how they sorted out the set list.
the guy before me couldn't mix to save his life, this is how his set went.. serato -> cue point for drop -> slap across corssfader -> repeat. no mixing involved what so ever, and when he did, it was a fucking one way ticket to trainwreck central.

made me look fucking awesome tho :D hahaha
you get this alot unfortunately! I was in main room for Alix Perez at this point. You should have heard the guy on after him, he was playing tunes from start to finish, then just switching to the next, playing full intros and pretty much full outros! Had to leave after about 15 mins of it cause my mate was starting to get angry in his drunken state, was close to going over and kicking him off the decks haha! Sorry I didnt come say hello, next time bruv.

The problem with your post is it's sheer ignorance...

It's regression first and foremost...let's clear that up...dubstep was a haven for creative minds & proper producers from all the other electronic scenes around at that time and it's now regressed backwards to being in the same boat as d&b was...

Chances are they have no clue who the real godfathers are...i very much doubt they have a clue about proper dubstep at all...

I have no issue with any one genre...just the sound we are discussing here is synonymous now with extremely generic formulas...of course it can be good but no-one wants to make that stuff...it's all about who can be the most filthy and comically aggressive & hard sounding...

There' no balance....all people are asking for at raves now are remixes of the top 40 and the most obviously awful dumbed down posturing nonsense...they even have the nerve to tell older heads that what they're playing isn't dubstep BECAUSE it isn't that shit they think wrongly is dubstep...

There is awesome skullstep/wobblers/metalstep about but that stuff isn't whats being caned....vex'd, goth trad, luke envoy, broken note, coki, milanese..just off the top of my head are light years ahead of these ten a penny producers that it seems merely have to make a comedy bassline or perhaps have someone meowing on their track or maybe saying ginger tnuc over and over to become the next big thing in the scene.....substance is not something these people are interested in or receptive to...if you play any amazing wobblers or ultra aggressive stuff then the student n-dubz hat wearing crowd don't wanna know...it has to be throw away garbage before it even enters their conciousness....

I have no problem with how i am viewed...i just think it's a shame for dubstep that i guess a lot of amazing producers will end up going elsewhere/not get booked anymore due to the intense demand for crap from the posh student takeover crew..

& for the record 'chav' is a stupid word and the type of people i think you are alluding to are more welcome at an event with me playing than tom, imogen, tarqwin & penelope...

I play it all..that isn't even the problem....these discussions always seem so circular with you..

for the record...i am NOT stating that any style is all bad.....i am stating that the worst examples of said sound are currently popular and the said subgenre they are making their own shit version of has taken over.

I play all types from king cannibal to benga to loefah to goth-trad to n-type to shackleton to gravious to bar9 to boxcutter to scorn to geiom to vex'd...

just for once perhaps this concept might hopefully god willing enter your brain....

haha whaaa? How can the promoter let such things happen? I was meaning to ask you actually, do you use serato aswell? It's just that I'm off to Brookes this year and I really can't bring all my vinyl so i was thinking about selling off all the vinyl i have that i can buy a digital FLAC/WAV copy of and buying tractor or serato?..
yeh i know! im so glad that i destroyed it tho, so many people afterwards came up to me and wanted to shake my hand.. i felt like sort of big time DJ hahaha. i even wheeled a couple tunes, on some n-type 'turbo wheely deallllllyyyyyy' tip lol. It was a joint night between University of Birmingham and Aston University... and i dont wanna sound like a prick, but there are very, very few good DJ's in the Aston DJ society.

yeh i got serato, it saves u so much money at uni. TRUST. plus u can get tunes off junodownload.com and they are pretty cheap. and especially good for releases that you only want one side of. Like that 'Warning' tune with the DnB tune on flip.
i still buy vinyl every month or so tho, just to keep my stash up to date and for those absolute bangers you need on wax. plus, serato lets you record your vinyls to mp3/wav and then u dont even need to carry the vinyl you bought!

although i do like to take them with me sometimes jus because it sounds 10x better.

All this bitching, this is juvenile. In case you haven't noticed, the same thing happens with every genre of music. If you were a tech head, the scene has been taken over by fluffy munted homophobe., if you were a metal head, you'll understand that the scene has been raped by the current gen of metalcore/hardcore/deathcore/apple and every other type of fruit core listening homophobe. to the point of almost redefining the scene in the public eye, it sucks, get over it and listen to what you like, even with the inevitable unstoppable change, what's good will always have its own followers and scene, simple as that. Just keep making requests for Burial at every wobble gig you find yourself at until the tool mixing admits he only has Mt Eden Dubstep's life works available. Then punch him in the face and make him eat his CDJ. Its good anger therapy.

I totally agree, even my friend who I introduced to dubstep the same time I discovered it has jumped onto this gorestep brostep bandwagon... I mean, it seems to me that he went in the direction of "making as much noise as possible" and I went in the direction of "appreciating this amazing ear candy." Kode9 and Mala are gods and Loefah and Coki are close behind. As of now, I actually think were all a little better off than 3 years ago. I mean there really wasn't any variety in the DUBSTEP genre, now Hemlock, Hessle, Hyperdub are all releasing amazing sounds. I'll let my friends stick to the Trillbass Borgore Datsik stuff (And sometimes they make great music)

And I think this whole bandwagon wobble stuff has really been bad, and in my opinion killed Rusko, but it's ok I'll just keep listening to Swamp, Medi, Hemlock and Hessle and hopefully they'll keep working hard.

wooda916 wrote:Last saturday Dbridge, Instra:mental SP:MC and DISTANCE were down to play at Custard Factory in Birmingham, Autonomic special, Distances first time ever playing in Birmingham. Ive seen distance before at DMZ and Outlook, but ive been waiting for over 3 years to see him play in Brum.

The night completely flopped, I mean at its peak, around 12:30, there was probably 50 people spread across 2 rooms and outside. Dbridge turned up (eventually) and him and SP smashed it, even though there was barley anyone in the room, respect to them for that. Instra:mental and Distance however didn't show (probably because they were told not to bother) and the night was locked off at about 3 - 3:30.

Now down the road on the same night, Datsik was playing alongside some locals, this night was apparently rammed (and ive seen pics as evidence).

This is symptomatic of what has happened to the sound (especially in Brum) when someone like Datsik can bring in a massive crowd, but Distance, a pioneer in this genre, and a pioneer of the aggy side of things (without distance there is no Datsik imo) brings in 0 people!

It absolutely baffles me, what has happened??? Distance should be bringing in a few hundred people at least just on his own, let alone with Dbridge and Instra:mental playing and the night being part of the club autonomic tour (some of the best and most forward thinking 170 in years).

To me its a matter of timing, it seems the vast majority of people who started listening to dubstep in late 08 - present will be into the circus records type thing, whereas before that threshold, the more sub-low orientated styles are perfered (obviously this is a general case). Birmingham only took off with dubstep around this time period, so its just gone completely down that route to the point where the other side of the spectrum is so under represented and under supported its unbelievable! Nights that even a year ago would get a decent turn out just die now.

I still love 'dubstep' but im increasingly finding it hard to go to a night that I enjoy from start to finish like I used to. Even DMZ 5th birthday was somewhat disappointing (other than DMZ & Loefah and last bit of Pinch and Distance that i caught) I guess its just bad luck that the most popular style of dubstep is a style that i dont like to listen to.

Well said. Was there that night and said exactly the same thing.
