This Snare.

What sample and/or fx does it require to get a similar snare to the snares in both tunes? I've been trying for ages but just don't have anything that sounds like it at all. Any help is much appreciated.

sounds like a rimshot with a really short envelope decay and sustain wise to it to sound like a snap to me
its all about the envelope on the sound and pitch to me
prolly could do it with white noise

QFT, burial snares are all about low passing, to make them softer and then adding some resonance to make it pop a bit more, and bit of reverb to clean it up if need be. I've also found that if you go download the Ohm Force Fromage Plugin (its in the free studio in the production bible) then you can get some really nice pops that less resemble the crunch of a snare and so make for some really clean percussion.

Going back to the flying lotus one, I think the guys are right. That snare sample is so short that it probably has a lot to do with the sample and just an abrupt envelope. Next time i'm at my normal pc i'll link to a bunch of loops that are great for sampling realitic drums from. For something like this you want to stay away from normal dubstep crunch snares with long tails, but i guess you figuered that out
