How did you start in your musical journey?
Oy oy.
For those of you that have conquered the 'suck' phase of making electronic music, how was it that you got started? Books? Took courses? Had a friend show you the ropes? All of the above? None of the above? What's the best path a noob should take towards getting comfortable making good electronic music?
(btw, this "noob" I refer to isn't me. At all. *cough* *hack*)

Started off playing drums, always liked heavy music. Did music tech as one of my subjects in 6th form which introduced me to both cubase and logic and took it from there! i guess my early liking of heavy live music, metal, rock etc. could be one of the reason I ended up loving and producing dubstep

Started off playing drums, played for seven years, listening to heavier stuff, prog rock and jazz. Got into elctronic music, started producing, I dont know if Im past the suck stage, the only thing to overcome it is persistence.

Re: How did you start in your musical journey?
I wasnt suposed to be making music i was in Northallerton prison and got a place on a radio production course. The prison had its own radio station it didnt broadcast but every tv in the prison had it on channel 6 or summat like that. I made beats in there because they had fl studio on all of the machines. The who ran the course wasnt boverd they kept me on for another 3 week ( the course was for 3 week) The teacher kept me on becaus i was quiet and just knuckled down with my music while everyone else fucked about. I turned down open prison while i was on the course too thats probly another reason they kept me on.

Re: How did you start in your musical journey?
started in hiphop (old school and new school), listened to alotta progressive metal, and hard rock, then started listening to alotta techy death metal, and psychedelic/experimental stuff.
head got turned towards aphex twin and squarepusher (dont remember exactly how) and i was plunged into the world of electronic music.
always knew that in the end I wanted to make music of some sort though. before I actually did create anything I used to always come up with songs in my head. fruity loops pulled those songs from out of my head onto the computer

Re: How did you start in your musical journey?
mom made me take classical piano as a kid. took music in school. in my early teens i got some turntables but i didn't give a fuck about mixing. just spent all my time scratching over loops. then i got an MPC and some VA synths so i could start making hip-hop beats and my own loops to scratch overe.
from making mostly sampled based music i became more and more interested in drum programming. that got me into a lot of different types of electronic music. forgot about music production for about 18 months maybe. then wanted to get back into it but decided to go the software route. picked up a copy of reason. then moved onto renoise/reaper combo.

I started my musical journey with a young heart full of hope and a pocket full of dreams. I wrote acoustic ballads centring around the loss of innocence experienced by young people in this increasingly hostile world..........
THEN I STOPPED BEING A cigarette AND GOT INTO DUBSTEP!!!! WHOOOOAAAAHHH!!!!!

Another drummer here
I just got really into some electronic music and I opened up fruity loops and its so intuitive to a drummer, love at first fight...
Re: How did you start in your musical journey?
i started off with deep house because thats what my dad spun and produced so i just kind of naturally eased into that ... i duno if i have passed the "suck stage" but.. i started making tunes in search of my own sound tbh.. It took a long time to even find something close to what i wanted, and even then i still feel as im not really even that close to sounding how i want.. After the first 3 years of producing i finally felt like i was getting into a groove, finding myself being able to open up Reason or whatever, and know what direction i wanted to go in. That to me is the key really, have direction towards the sound you want...
