A pitch envelope could do the deal, but I'm almost postive compression alone doesn't. There seems to be a different sound in the kick - and I don't think you can shape the existing frequencies to sound like that with compression alone. I'm really intrigued, please tell us if you ask Loefah and he tells you his secret

I bene enjoying making beats with an 808 kick but now my kick sounds weak without the punch its putting me off lol

Been remixing most of the day... so haven't had a chance to tune-check for you... but just listen to Licensed to Ill again. There are some breaks (Led Zeppelin, Creedence, etc)... but the drum machines are pretty much 808's. Such amazing stuff was accomplished on that record... simple but powerful. It is true you can hear Rick Rubin's fingerprints all over it (his rock ethos bleeding over hiphop production), but that isn't a bad thing.
While you are at it, also re-listen to Paul's Boutique.... another under-appreciated sonic adventure.

... personally, my fave is Paul Revere, but the whole beat is reversed so it doesn't have the boom.. but is amazing nonetheless.
*** edit: as someone who is always concerned about adding more & more to my own productions, I think it is a great exercise as a producer to re-listen to Paul Revere.. When I was a kid, I liked the track cos I couldn't believe they talked about "doing" a girl with a whiffle-ball bat (this was before hiphop got really dirty, ya'll... it was shocking back in the day)... but as an adult and producer, I can't believe they did such a dope track with a simple 808 beat...REVERSED. If there was a big track on an entirely reversed beat before that, I hadn't heard it. Largeness through simplicity. There is almost nothing to that beat, but it is done so well.... ***

SPL is great for emphasising the decay more than the attack, didnt want to use that as it was cheating
I just used the UAD neve 33609 (SE version as it doesnt model the distortion). Prob a bad choice as only has a fixed attack and choice of 4 decays, but its almost built for this (ie adding punch/clout). Ill post mp3s tonight hopefully, really busy atm. Bit of limiter afterward (2-3dB) to tame my overemphasised attacks.
