word, this judge thing is like... can we have the judges write shit about every song and say a few things or something, and can we know who the judges are and stuff like that...
or just go back to voting.

Well we decided to have a panel, but it appears that not everyone is always goin to be available for judging. I think this next one might be user vote depending on how many judges I can get before the end of comp.

I personally think if there are gonna be judges it should be known who they are, and they should give reviews of each of the songs, what they liked what they didnt. all of them should also tell us who they voted for and why they did.

I think its kinda weird if its just some behind the scenes pm thing going on, like it has been (correct me if im wrong)

Yhes I agree with you, so for that reason since there are not enough judges, I will open the post up for communal decision, which could be a risk to voter spam, but I'll have to let it go.

Just to give you an idea here is the list of judges from previous competitions.

For me its all about entering/taking the challange. Winning is definately nice too, but not the primary reason I do these comps. Ofcourse I woudnt be happy when someone else won with a worse track by spamming, but in the end it doesnt really bother me. If these comps keep going im happy, judges or votes, dont really care.

These comps are one of the best DSF features, I just need to cut mine down to under 3:00 and then PM it to HAACK.

Well said. I've probably already said this too much, but I learned more about song structure & arrangement from doing these contests (since DSF8 I think!) than I have in the rest of my near 20 years of musicmaking.

That whole album (Big Fun) is a great touchstone for a lot of modern bass music. Ask Photek!

'Bout what, Photek? (Sorry, I know I'm not the poster you were asking but...)

Listen to his Risc vs. Reward, Modus Operandi, and Form & Function albums and you'll know.

nowaysj wrote:^ can you speak a little more about that?

He plays the album (if I recall correctly) in a documentary for a dutch tv show and talks about texture of sounds and rhythm, and how his vision of dnb is an extension of the experimentations of later-period Miles and Herbie Hancock etc.

Maybe drawing the lines between Big Fun and Rusko is difficult but certainly between Photek and other dnb of his ilk, and a lot of the dubstep that gets produced in this sample pack competitions, which I suppose isnt suprising given the nature of them.

Its towards the end of that clip but its worth watching the whole thing if you havent already.
