A question for anyone.........ish

Post by snypadub » Mon Apr 05, 2010 10:12 am

preferably someone with an understanding of theoretical physics.

According to the standard model of our universe, or at least my understanding of it; the universe is an infinate mass ever expanding. This is possible because of several factors including dark energy pulling the universe ever further, dark matter- allowing things like gravity to work in galaxies, atomic theory- allowing everything to be so incredibly impossible and so on. However, dark flow suggests that all matter (dark and light) is flowing away from our "infinate" universe into another universe "beyond". My question is stupidly simple (I am not a physicist so I am a little sketchy with some theories): How can anything infinate, namely our universe, exist within the confines of another infinity?

dark flow = scientists naming something that probably doesn't exist in an attempt to explain something they don't understand
imo

there's loads of universes, nothing is infinite about our universe
but there is an infinite amount of universes:
imo

thats where youve got it wrong, our universe is not an infinite mass. the only problem is that 96% of its mass is unaccounted for, and scientists have dubbed this 'lost' mass 'dark matter'.

We can only understand it from a human perspective/interpretation but its infinite in its own right, however that may be.

The only way I can picture it is by numbers; numbers can go on and on forever re-creating themselves, doubling, multiplying adding etc. but they dont need anything to double or multiply into they can just do it.. There are no confines.

There are some pretty fundamental doubts in all of these theories at the moment... best is just to pick the one that sits best with you and have a long hard think about it.

Hackman's right about the "Dark" stuff IMHO... I've always thought "Dark Matter" was too good a name for a term that is essentially just describing "All these wrong results we can't account for" - people outside of physics start thinking it's a real, testable phenomenen rather than just a sticking plaster for incomplete science.

As results for energy also don't add up in the standard model, you end up with Dark Energy and now even Dark Flow... it's probably not worth shoehorning too many of these concepts too hastily into your thinking unless you're actually running experiments to try and work out what the "dark" elements are.

We just don't know yet.

i read a book that said the force that is known in some cultures as the creator or god (though not a god because we are one with this creative force as we are with everything) has created a universe to explore every possibility, this universe being free will

I was under the impression that our universe is not infinitely expanding and will one day once again implode in on itself and return to being a singularity.

Think about it this way: there are infinite different numbers between 0 and 1 using decimals. But there are also infinite different numbers between 0 and 100. Botht these values are infinity even though 100 is 100 times bigger than 1

this idea is called the big crunch, but was disproved a while ago, due to the fact that if our universe were to implode, its rate of expansion should slow down, and red shift shows us that our the rate of expansion of our universe is increasing. the energy that drives this accelerating expansion is what scientist call 'dark energy', because they dont have a clue what it is.
btw red shift is when the light from distant galaxies is shifted into the red end of the spectrum due to the fact that the source of light is accelerating away from the reciever.

Also, all that we're can see of the universe is merely the Observable Universe, i.e. the parts of the universe that are close enough for light from those regions to have travelled to us. We have no idea what the universe is like outside of this observed region. We could potentially extrapolate and say it's all the same. Alternatively, what we see as the increase in expansion rate due to "dark flow" could just be a "local" phenomenon in the wider, unobserved universe. Another conjecture is that beyond the confines of our observable bubble universe are an infinite variety of other bubble universes. This is a consequence of the inflation theory that is currently used to describe the creation of the universe - it allows for multiple inflation points to happen in a larger universe.

As an aside, dark flow does not suggest that matter is flowing into another universe beyond, it is just an observation that all matter in the universe is drifting in a general direction towards a particular point. It could indeed be a different universe, but that's just speculation at this point.

well - as we travel through time...and not space - space just being how we measure relevation

..things change

You ought to consider the nature of matter..
because it's not that difficult to accept infinite amounts of nothing.
