Guinness- In the glass or out the tin

Post by owengriffiths » Mon Feb 05, 2007 1:55 am

I just can't decide which I like best. People will sneer and say that it's meant to be drank from a glass, or ask questions like, 'where abouts is the creamy white head inside the tin, surely's it's homogenised, it should be black at the bottom and white at the top', but I have to put my hand on my heart and say I appreciate both ways of drinking Guinness.

It's like Orange juice. To me Pure OJ isn't better than concentrate, it's just different. I like them both equally, in the same way that I can like Chicken & beef equally

Out of a can can't compare with draft for me. But if I do drink it out a can I put it in a glass. Never tried it straight fae the can.

But a true alcoholic doesnt always have access to a pub, and so he puts up with the offie. 95% of the Guinness I drink is from cans. Yes the stuff in the pubs tastes a lot better, but in a strictly home context (or in the park chucking empty tins at swans if that's your thing) the question remains. Sometimes I like the cold mettalic taste you get from the tin, which is made from, after all, metal.

But to get this thread really going we need Sgt Poaks to wake up. Personally I am drinking Guinness at the moment from a 'German Beer Glass' (better than a pint glass for sure) while trying to get this Monday's blog finished, and it being after midnight, it is now technically Monday. 'Draught' Guiness in a can is surprisingly palatable. That's an example of technology really working, it's more than just a marketing gimmick. But really, glass all the way.

Best in a glass, preferably in Eire. Guinness often tastes shite on draught as the pipes to the cellar aren't cleaned regularly - the Irish have special Guinness teams going around doing quality control.

Has to be said though that I thought Beamish stout on draught had a better taste though.
Hmm....

You can get a thing called a Surger. It is absolutely amazing. It lets you pour Guinness out of a can into a glass and it tastes as good as a proper draft pint

What's this Extra Stout Guinness all about. The stuff in the tins which is all fizzy and has no head. That stuff is a fucking joke, but I supose if people had to wait decades for the widget to appear then they got used to it, but really.

And Murphys? Different just for the sake of it.

Today's issue includes an interview with the Brighton/ London boys who run the Clandestine Cultivations label and the Redstar & Dubpressure clubnights, and also some record reviews of Random Trio and Moldy tracks. No Guinness though.

In response to Electric Eliminator: It's bloody hard work though. I've only been part time employed for the past year and a half so for a lazy bastard like me it's a shock to actuallly get my hands dirty.

As for the Guinness debate: Maybe only Poax has the right to pass judgement.

That comment about Guinness tasting better in Ireland. I couldn't tell you because I cant remember the last time having it in England. But there is one thing you are light years ahead on: Real Ale. This stuff is virtually non existent in Northern Ireland (pubs) at least, one of the few places that is supporting it is Wetherspoons, an English chain, and they've only got a few oubs anyway, the Belfast one being particularly shit.

Need Real Ale though, just don't understand why it's so rare over here, whether it's the cost of importation, the troubles, general apathy, who knows? Every Pub has virtually the same beer on tap, the only variation being whether they've plumped for Stella or Heineken.
