Vastus intermedius

Origin (proximal): Arises from the anterior and lateral aspects of the femoral shaft and the lateral intermuscular septum.

Insertion (distal): Inserts into the posterior surface of the upper border of the patella and forms part of the quadriceps tendon. The patellar tendon then inserts into the tibial tuberosity.

Action: Extension of the leg at the knee joint.

Innervation: Femoral nerve (L2, L3 and L4)
