Grime DJs play dubstep, why don't Dubstep DJs play grime?

Post by Fukhed » Thu Apr 22, 2010 3:23 pm

Plenty of Grime DJs use dubstep tunes in their sets. The two genres are very close to each other, with a similar emphasis on bass and very similar BPM ranges: so why don't Dubstep DJs play more grime?

DJ JJ does it to great effect here: http://hedmuk.blogspot.com/2010/04/dj-j ... k-mix.html

Aside from Plastician, there are few Dubstep DJs who will do it (other than playing the 'Next Hype' remix, of course): why?

There's more then just Plastician dropping grime, although it's the kind of 2nd tier dj's doing it rather then the 'main' djs.

Hessle Crew; BenUFO and Ramadanman play plenty.

Oneman plays lots.

It's the new breed of "future garage" people who are playing alot.

It's not that uncommon

Not that aware of the future garage DJs playing that much grime, even so: it doesn't really answer the question of why dubstep DJs aren't doing it.

Also, I have to disagree with your Oneman suggestion, having seen him play out on a few occasions and also having listened to his Rinse Mix (tracklisting: http://hedmuk.blogspot.com/2010/02/rins ... neman.html).

Would be open to seeing/hearing some examples, though.

I rode into this topic on my high horse..... hahaha big up for noticing I still play grime.

My sets are actually about 50/50 grime and dubstep right now due to a surge in good grime production and a dip in original dubstep production.

Listen to this weeks podcast, shit loads of good music from Rudekid, Silencer, G Tank, D Double E, P Money etc.

Everyone knows you still play grime, Plastician! And huge respect for doing so, aswell.

The grime scene, particularly in terms of production, is so exciting right now: hence the above question.

a lot of it has to do with the lines being blurred.

i've always maintained that guys like Joker, Starkey, Gemmy, Guido, (and alot of Untold's newish stuff) etc are making grime instrumentals influenced by dubstep. and that because "dubstep" labels are releasing them they've fallen under the "dubstep" umbrella. nothing wrong with that really though.

but yeah like Plastician said there's been loads more good "traditional" grime productions lately. id say the past few years there really hasn't been much as everything turned to doing mixtapes instead of putting out instrumental 12"s. but recently there's been a lot more stuff that is really good and more easily available.

Problem for a lot of DJ's is, that because of the nature of a lot of grime's listener base, producers are less likely to give DJ's exclusives to play on their shows as they're all scared their stuff will get leaked.

Works out well for me though :) its pretty much impossible to get something exclusive from dubstep producers because there are so many dj's playing it

And I also totally agree about the comment on Joker, Gemmy, Guido, Starkey. It's closer to grime than dubstep and barring guido I met all these guys when they were playing grime pretty much solely in their sets.

this, same as how dubstep is now trying to fall under the "future garage" label when dubstep was future garage the whole time

We play a nice ammount of grime in our sets, we still make it (we have a vocal grime & hip hop mixtape due out this summer) & grime is our roots as producers.

T_! from Macabre Unit still plays alot of grime in his sets too.

Nuff props to Plastician, he been bridging the gap between the 2 since... well as far as i can remember.

I think the mixture between the 2 in a set keeps it interesting.

We make and play grime - alongside other styles - never stopped from the times of "Oi" and "Eskimo."

I've been playing out for 5 years and always dropped a healthy amount of Grime, along with other garage derivations. There's always been a group of people within dubstep who've highly rated and represented grime as well.

I think it's healthy, and by the looks of things it's happening more and more thanks to a greater understanding of the origins of this sound we call dubstep.

This is what it is to me:
