This tune is fabulous. Sounds like you got some really low end kicks just kinda repeating like a fast heartbeat, then a mid/hi end percussion break repeating itself over that. Like Cairo said in the timed comments, it definitely has some kind of underwater vibes going on...i was also thinking jello or pudding vibes. The only thing i would personally do to improve it: switch up the mid/hi end break throughout the song or at different parts of the song to give it more interesting variation.

@WorkerAnt: Dunno about your track, I get the feelin your bass doesn't fit your melody and other sounds at all. Like it more from 1.26 on , sounds seem to match here. Think overall there's still some work

@J-one: Nice vibes man, loving the track track, spacey sounds are awesome and you matched your drums and bassline perfectly to it.

@Dustyspeakers: same what j-one told you, liked the intro then your drop was kind of miserable and I really expected a deep deep sub to kick in. Think you should change that.

@Fassyman: fuck the midrange bass , this is deeeep ! Perfect percussion and perfect intro. IMO the high notes right before the drop are unnessecary leave that out and your drop will be alot better aswell.

@Gabbo: snare is kinda weak, loving your slow bass , kinda chasing shadows style. Also loved that trumpet in the middle, nice job overall on the song.

My Track: Still need to arrange full length , but here's a preview ;)

Wikum - The 8 bit Ep

Post by Wikum » Thu Apr 22, 2010 10:17 am

Hi everyone. I posted this in the dub forum too. But I think I should post this here to seeing as I'd like to introduce myself (hi lol :D ). I think I'll be using these forums more often from now on.

In 2008, I began making Dubstep for the first time after becoming disillusioned by the strictness and rigidness of todays Drum and Bass. In late 2008, I made 8 bit, my first attempt at a Dubstep tune. Then in early 2009, I made Fire Walker in one 12 hour non stop session of madness.

Unfortunately, in the first 3rd of 2009, I had to have major spinal surgery. This has meant I've been stuck in a back brace and unable to sit at the computer for long periods of time and make tunes. Luckily I'm now totally recovered.

Anyways, enough of the sentimental stuff. I posted both of these tracks on my youtube page http://www.youtube.com/djwickstar (please subscribe/add me as a friend if you have a youtube account). To this day, I still get ridiculous amounts of comments about 8 bit. It's now had over 40,000 plays.

Both of these tunes were never 100% finished, and I've given away mp3's of them for so long that I'm not going to bother finishing/releasing either of them. I didn't think they were polished enough to be released and they needed some mix adjustments. Anyways, I'd like to share them with all of you. In return, please spread the word/add me as a friend/subscribe to my youtube and soundcloud pages!!! thanks. I've lost nearly 12 months of time for making music and I'm now looking to spread my name and get it out there. :t: :

Right now I'm in the process of soundproofing my studio and getting it all setup again properly. Then I intend on making an entire album, which I'll share clips of with the forum at some point. If anyone is interested in my work, wants to collaborate, wants to do a remix, or wants me to remix some of their work, get in touch either on here or on one of my other web pages in my sig.

Peace,
WIkum.

@Penndragon - Love it when you start 'gating' that vocal line, which is a brilliant sample. Strong kick. The breakdown at 2min could have done with more ambient/atmospheric effects or samples in the back to add a bit more to the vocal sample (just my opinion tho). I'm really diggin the vibe of this overall though, it's got me moving to it (which is what matters). Maybe a better outro tho, cos it stops waaaay to abruptly! Good work mate.

@jstick - I certainly see what you mean by "pretty fun sounding" The snare needs to be much more meaty - even just slapping some reverb on it would have done, or introducing some different snares to compliment the variating synths. I'm liking the different quirky nosies you got going on. However, it's too short! Make this bad boi longer and work on each bar in detail, because this can be even more fun if you start incorporating subtle effects and samples into the beat. Cool track.

Ok, now for something I've been waiting to "release" for quite a while now, but only just got round to up'in it. I'm going for a more laid back feel. It's called 'Traffic' because it tried to portray waiting for something but knowing you can't make it come any quicker, so all you can do is try and enjoy the stillness of the moment - each to their own tho eh 8)

(soundcloud coments would be nice too, because that comment bar is looking a bit bare  )

I'm enjoying it mate. Deep sounds and it rolls nicely. Drums sound nice and crisp. I reckon some sneaky vocal samples could compliment and add interest (don't over do tho).

hi
I hope its ok, if I post my mix here.
could some skilled dj's please give me some tips/tricks/hints/critic?
my general mistake: because of the hurry to put the next track in, my beatmatching suffers.

Nice one man, Liking the atmosphere, and i'm liking that lead you have in there. Drop was nicely done and that synth you have in the background gives the track a nice spacey feel.

What can i say man, heavy stuff! Loving that intro on 8-bit, nice use of samples on both tracks. Sinister bass and great beat on 8-bit and i like what you've done with the synth bass on Fire-Walker, the introduction of the percussion and that arp sounding synth is such a nice touch! That pad you bring in afterwards is a realy nice suprise too.

I can tell you had fun making this , nice work with the modulation. The only thing i can think of is maybe adding a touch of reverb and delay to the vocals but that may be just me, otherwise i can really see what you mean by fun sounding :).

I enjoyed this! Nice laid back vibes man, that coupled with the name 'traffic' really created a nice image of watching a busy road just seeing the headlights fly by in streams of light (no idea what the effect is called if you have any idea what i'm talking about aha), loving that snare too, it hits hard and yet has a real nice atmospheric contribution to the rest of the track. Can really drift away to thias one though, great work! :D

Here's three of my latest, they're not great but would be interested in hearing what you guys think. :)

Hey dudes wat up

This is an early track where i was going for a more chilled, trancey vibe but with builds to maintain some hardness. Be interested to see if it's enjoyed.
Feedback on production and structure would be great! All feedback welcome and appreciated :D

@Jstick - Sounds absolutely awesome dude. Really nice energetic vibe you got going on in it. I'd just take the other's advice and make the vocals a bit more echoey, and make it longer!

@Bugsky - Nice 2step vibe coming along, but it just seems kind of bland, think you need some more interesting bits in there; but I'm not sure, It's not really my favourite genre.

@Neurotik - Really nice chilled Scuba feel coming through. They're all pretty good, especially the last one, so I don't really know what advice to give you.

@WorkerAnt - Don't know mate; the track is all over the place; it doesn't seem to follow any structure. Clean it up and make it all work together. Focus on the song as a whole.

@J-One - Really different, subby stuff. What dubstep should be about. As some dude commented on there: sounds like you're trapped in a bubble. I'd just try and push out a bit more sub, so that my whole desk is rattling. It's one of those songs that really needs a fucking ridiculous bass.

Soundcloud

Here's my fucked up abomination.

EDIT: I have a feeling the sub-bass channel needs to be toned down.

Some of the above have already been posted in the 'Dubs' section, but I didn't recieve much feedback so decided to post them here too, all in the hope that things are different here. :)
