there are gazillions of free soundfonts available online. you have to specify your needs... is it drums, keyboards, orchestra?

or just go to kvr, join the forum and do the 'free soundfont' search.

you download the soundfont files and extract them to your soundfont folder in FL (if thats what you use) and you open them into a new channel with the soundfont player. idk how different it is with other DAWs but FL is easy. Hammersound.net has some good ones.

I use ableton, I have never seen that file extension before

you need a soundfont player if your going to use them in Live. I do believe

almost all samplers can read soundfonts--- in the guise of DAW samplers, they're a nearly ancient technology. some classic sample packs out there tho, ontology drums & the like..
