Love me some oldschool Shaw Brothers films

The One Armed Swordsman (swordfighting more so than Kungfu, but it's a classic)
Return to the 36 Chambers (a little more lighthearted)
Golden Swallow

for starters.

King Boxer (Shaw Brothers Classic)
Master Of The Flying Guillotine (for something pretty ridiculous but awesome)

A Touch of Zen (classic, big influence on Crouching Tiger etc, big philosophical side to it)
Boxer from Shantung (more on the violently nihilistic side)

Both the Kurosawa films I've seen (Kagemusha and Seven Samurai) have been awesome - which others should I watch?

Some pretty good suggestions here. The Hammer Horror meets Shaw Brothers film 'Seven Golden Vampires' is truly a spectacle!

More of a wuxia/fantasy film but "Duel to the Death" is one of my favorites. May or may not be something that you are interested in.

One the one hand, it's not very philosophically dense, other than the differences between the chinese and japanese lead characters in their perception of the warrior ethos (hint: they don't agree with one another).

On the other hand, it has an 8-foot ninja...
