Philosophy book reccomendations?

Post by -dubson- » Sun May 02, 2010 8:36 pm

Bit of a broad question but anyone got any books which have really blown their mind?

I like Albert Camus, The Stranger is my favourite. Some of Bertrand Russell's stuff is good too (and easy to read).

I wasn't being serious... the movies better anyway.

I've got some Nietzsche stuff (antichrist is probably the best out of what I've read), Plato's Republic (fucking bampot) and some John Stuart Mill stuff which is pretty interesting.

Most of the time I've found it a bit of a slog to get through though, so yeah reccomendations on anything that's a bit more of a easier read would be great.

Kind of questions the very nature of science, so it's kind of philosophical. But yeah, mind blowing book.

I'm trying to find a copy of The Brothers Karamazov because everyone says it is amazing. Have you read it and if so would you recommend it?

Sophies world. bout a girl who gets philiosophy lessons, and then it gets all wierd and matrixy. basically a history of philosophy in novel form.

also the end of mr y. about a girl who finds this ancient drug that kind of lets u surf peoples minds. then gets very deep into physics/philosophy. more of an easy read than sophies world.

Not so keen on Bertrand Russell... philosophy departments all over the country are still in love with him

Mark Fisher (Capitalist Realism); Marshall Berman (All That's Solid Turns Into Air, The Politics of Authenticity); David Harvey (The Condition of Postmodernity)

...and Marx of course - a great place to start is The Revolutionary Ideas of Karl Marx by Alex Callinicos. (whatever else you read, read this!)

i dipped into that a few time, mainly for the history of philosophy but imo the author presents theism as the only viable philosophy, he pushes his own beliefs way too much and gives others too little time for it to be considered as giving a balanced overview of western philosophy. utilitarianism, nihilism, even existentialism barely get a mention.
its like he uses the '... for dummies' franchise to sell his own views, which appear to be based on the fact that he had a lost volleyball returned to him by strangers  !

actually, thinking about it, it is just philosophy for dummies. the only usefullness i got out of it was the fact that it gave a list of historically eminent philosophers to read up on.
