bertrand russell was a supporter of eugenics and world government, so when reading his books watch for the brain wash.

Sophie's World by Jostein Gaardner is quite a good introduction, althought it'll probably take a couple of reads to get it all into your head. It covers about a couple of milleniums worth of philosophy in about 300 pages.

I borrowed it off my housemate a couple of years ago... great read, really worth the time.

Also, I know it's a bit like suggesting "The Best of the Beatles" in a conversation about what the best Beatles album is, but I found Ben Dupre's "50 Philosophy Ideas (You Really Need To Know)" absolutely brilliant. It's a collection of 50 essays, all pretty accessable. I found it a really good introduction.

I always found philosophy a little intimidating as a child, as my Dad and eldest brother both have degrees in it, but it's certainly one of the best subjects I've ever got into.

I'm trying to find a copy of The Brothers Karamazov because everyone says it is amazing. Have you read it and if so would you recommend it?
trying? isn't it 5 quid on amazon?

......

ummm 3 quid. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Karamazov-Broth ... 886&sr=8-1

yeah it's, ummm, very good... I dunno if you like that sort of thing, this is one of the best... do it it's only 3 quid, read it all at once and then go around thinking like a russian gentleman for a few days, being courteous to ladies and being concerned with the fur of your collar. best to get immersed in these

I'm suspicious of any book which aims to compile anything approaching a definitive collection of 'most important' philosophical texts and ideas... there is no such thing as impartiality or opinion free from ideological attachment. What would a neocon include in their 'best of' list?

The premise of these kind of books is.

Science doesn't answer a particular question yet, thus the answer must the spiritual hippy shit they happen to believe in. Why is the default fallback answer someone else's idea of spiritual hippy shit or unicorns?
