Watching i was so surprised by the lib dems i thought they would get a gain similar to the torys but yeah, even though theyve lost 10 seats so far theyve got a gain in votes, 6 million roughly, labour has got 8 million with 5 times as many seats, i guess their votes are just thinly spread and arent really making an impact.

green party got a seat which is really good in brighton i think, would've liked to see them get a few more but im glad they're moving forward somewhat

i didnt hear any explanations throughout the night on why there was such a strong conservative swing, my guess is that people who dont "like" labour anymore decided to just vote for the next biggest party.

and i watched some of the channel 4 thing but tbh bbc news was a lot better not just in terms of the information but paxman, the rest of the presenters and politcians they were interviewing were hilarious

another thing did anyone see gordon browns constituency election? the guy standing behind him.. i love how brown goes through the candidates shaking their hands and then this guy just stares him down as he walks past

right, it would be great to count the total number of votes divide by the number of seats in parliament to determine the amount of seats each party would then that would be a truer form of democracy maybe, but it would be unpractical and the margin of error would be a lot higher. i think the constituency system is good enough and to be honest liberal democrats shouldve put more effort into concentrating on specific constituencies, knowing from experience how it works. a lot of the liberal democrat votes probably came from the 'clegg affect' which they were all talking about

but at the moment:

torys - 294 seats
labour - 251 seats
liberal democrats - 52 seats

26 seats left to go so the torys wont be able to get a majority but they can easily get more seats than labour and lib dem combined, which would rule out a coalition between those two parties

On this forum support is overwhelmingly Lib Dem so we're all a bit gutted right now that the polls didn't translate into votes/seats as was expected.

this is why i hate the parlimentary system, Tories get 9,948,310 votes and 286 seats, Labour get 7,899,678 votes and 236 seats, Lib Dems get 6,269,631 votes and ONLY 51 seats. WHAT THE FUCK! Such bullshit. It's always been such a shit and weak system, needs to be changed.

Watched the channel 4 election last night, was pretty funny, Robert Webb's Brown impression was hilarious aha. Found what Brian Cox was saying about the funding towards natural sciences pretty dissapointing though =/.

yes, but then surely they would have earned those seats? im not saying i support it, i dont they should have any seats, but it is supposed to be a fair system and so surely if people are voting for them then that means that there are people out there who support what they say, and have just as much right to free speech and expression as the rest of us. One would just hope that their arguments would be shot down in parliament if that situation were to arise, and that people would recognise that their ideals are not particularly good for moving britain forward.

if you get what i mean? im not sure i expressed it particularly clearly, but i hope so.

i guess the main problem with proportional representation would be deciding which seats they would get through proportional representation. the more i think about it the more complicated and confusing it gets, but i think a proportional government would be a lot more efficient in improving british life, as long as it is well set up and not rushed through without considering the implications of such a large upheaval.
