Getting Someone Else's Tunes Cut
In light of Loefah giving away Just A Beat in wav format (Big up Loefah for that!), I was wondering what are the rules/laws if any as regards to cutting a song that isn't yours to vinyl. Never having cut a vinyl myself before i don't know the in's and out's as such and would be grateful if someone could clear this up for me
Secondly and slightly off topic from the thread title, what are the things to look out for when going to cut vinyl?
Thanks for any advice

Re: Getting Someone Else's Tunes Cut
if someone has given me a track and I'm goign to get it cut I generally clearit with them first.
however, when it comes to the big producers giving stuff away for free you can take it as read that you can do what you want with it.
if your getting stuff cut, go here, they really know what they are doing and 2 10"for 50 quid is pretty good.

Loefah seemed fine with it when I asked for a .Wav to cut, (because I got a 320 from mediafire somehow.)

Re: Getting Someone Else's Tunes Cut
Ive had a few skream tracks cut at transition... the way i see it if the person has given the tune away then there is no problem with cutting it.
Will cost you £50 for two tracks onto a 12" dub at transition

Re: Getting Someone Else's Tunes Cut
Cheers for the info people. Quick thought, am i right in thinking that anything lower than a .wav is not of 'cuttable' quality, say a 320 for instance? If this is the case is it acceptable to ask a producer for a .wav file if they have given the 320 away?
Once again thanks for any advice

I imagine if they only gave a 320 away it's a different matter. If you requested the WAV and told them that you intend to cut a dubplate then I'm sure it's fine.Luke Yeah? wrote:Cheers for the info people. Re: Getting Someone Else's Tunes Cut
I cut Skream - Love Don't Come Easiy and another tune, both were 320 MP3's. I asked Jason about this at Transition and he said cutting 320 MP3's onto dub is fine and the difference is pretty un-noticable. I played the dub on a big system and it sounded great. Obviously a WAV is prefered but its still ok to cut a 320 MP3

I just know im going to end up blowing a fortune on this new interest of mine
Right been looking at Transitions site, anyone care to explain the difference between Apollo and Transco for a novice? Always thought it was Acetate or Vinyl :/ Are these simply the technical terms?
Thanks

Basic rule of thumb is this.... if the artist was at the event you're playing and if he heard you playing their tune would he punch you in the face afterwards?
If yes then you shouldnt be cuttin their tune

Think i'm going to blow quite a lot of money after this discovery...
Re: Getting Someone Else's Tunes Cut
Wisdom. Though it's worth noting that this has nothing to do with whether or not you cut it to vinyl, but whether you had the right to play the track in the first place.pkay wrote:Basic rule of thumb is this.... would he punch you in the face afterwards?
Whether you put it on vinyl, CD or 8-track hasn't got a damn thing to do with it.
Re: Getting Someone Else's Tunes Cut
its considered poor form to play someone's tunes when you are supporting them though innit?
If you were not supporting them but just dropped a Loefah tune in your set I cant see why he would punch ya. If he came up and asked how did you have a tune you could explain that
1 you loved their tune
2 you loved it so much that you got it cut to vinyl
3 you loved it so much that you wanted to play it out
dont see the issue myself so long as it was given away. I have to rip lots of vinyl that I buy as I use traktor and for some gigs I am playing I am getting a few dubs from a mate and I know he wont have any issues with me playing them out.
