DSF-ADVANCED ?

Post by Mad_EP » Mon May 17, 2010 1:15 am

Hello.

First of all, I am not starting this thread to call anyone out... but rather, cos I am a dipshit and have lost some past convo's, etc.... So in order to cover for my own mistakes, I might as well open it up to the masses....

Basically, I think there is a cohesive movement that agrees... there needs to be something done about the kindercampus vs. PhD divide that is starting to occur on this forum. No one dismisses the validity of a n00b who hears a wobble for the first time and wants to know how to re-create it. We have all been there...

..but on the on the other hand, there are lots of people on this forum who have pretty advanced knowledge... but very rarely show up because of the ridiculous number of repeat threads. It doesn't seem to be the best use of resources.

I am guilty myself - I really wanted to write a medium-advanced sticky on harmonic progression... but two things happened. 1) I got really swamped... (fair enough), but even when i had time, 2) it was hard to get motivated to put in the the hours cos the same questions were being asked over and over...even when the answers were sitting there in pure sunlight.

So let's fix this. How do we go about keeping the OG's in the same crib as the n00bs? we all can learn from each other... but maybe there needs to be a subtle divide...

Ideas?

Would be a rep system wouldnt it?

Where certain number of thumbs ups people give for solid posts = access to be able to post in o.g. section, before that, you can only read...

SImple, depending on if this is phpbb3 I already have to plugins on archive, someone just has to ask easy shit to implement...

used to do this on my board but to see who could access warez n the more devious tutorials n shit... same conceptthough, goes clear to fidonet and the 1337 section they repped people into.

this forum is too nice. that is the problem. it's very hard to make a forum noob friendly and also a geek paradise. i say everybody with a bit of knowledge just start acting like elite stnuc and then the overall tone of the forum will gradually change.

Hmmm sounds cool but how qualified is PHD? Like I know a bit about producing and feel I can occasionally contribute something worthwhile but am definitely still in doing my undergraduate (to stretch the metaphor a little too far). As long as everyone could still read the bad bwoy section it would be all good I guess. So would the mods decide when you were in? Would you get a sweet t-shirt?

i agree that if there was a seperate section for the high ups that anyone should be able to read it there fore learning from it. but only be able to post if they are high ups as well to keep out new kids on the block

:t: waiting on that thread so we can discuss harmonic progression... Do it up!

As for Badman R Us, I think it is a good idea and would help keep the solid knowledge from being diluted by the entry level production questions. Sort of an in between the Production Bible and the regular forum.

Mods turns it into an old school 1337 club...

rep, simplest plugin versiont here is, then a sticky thread or a subforum (thats never gonna happen why I say sticky thread, well nevr get plugin so this is all pipe dream) and then just set a good high value of thumbs ups needed to get in...

Its a simple as fuck mod too...

http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=368075

you up a few php files, copy n paste some code , its all a step by step, god love that anyone can be a sysadmin these days...

Sharmaji has always been fair i doubt a "1337" club would happen here

Maybe only count the votes of the people already in the 1337 club?
Just thinking of all the nubs giving each other rep on their "how 2 maek wobblz" posts so they can get into rude bwoy sound section vs. members that maybe don't post often but have goodies to share.
Kinda depends on how symbiotic the noobs are and how ninja the leet production master lurkers are. -t-

I'm sure as long as the first line of question defense is the main production forum then the "How Do I Sound Like Datsixion" posts won't make it to the secret armored bunker.

I may have just graduated from noob school but I deff think this a a great idea, it takes a fair bit of digging to find the golden threads here and this would really help that. I like the idea of the rep system but i also agree that if the noobs formed an alliance they could rep themselves in... maybe to solve that once you got the amount of rep needed you would have to submit like an "application" to get in, proving that you just didn't get a bunch of noob friends to rep you up, basically all it would have to be is a little message or something saying "hey i have enough rep" and all the mods would have to do is look at your post count (i mean you get rep when someone likes a post you made right) so if you post count was higher than a few hundred that would be proof enough that you just didnt have a noob rep party.

I donno maybe im thinking about it to hard

LOOOOVE this idea. I'd love to be able to learn more advanced stuff from people who know what they're doing in an area that's not being swamped down by most of the stuff you tend to see in the Production forum. I also think that it should require some sort of approval to post in, but should be visible to everyone.

How to decide who gets to post?

Perhaps a What.cd style interview, if anyone is familiar with it? Pass a kind of a quiz of technical knowledge to prove that you're for real? The problem I foresee with that is just massive amounts of people trying to get in and a few poor souls having to do a lot of work interviewing them.

Not a bad idea, but think about new people that know their stuff. They will probably be put off this. Who would bother registering, then posting enough times in the "noob" section, in order to get rep, and THEN get access to the good stuff?

Imagine if we lost a new Macc this way!!! :o

why it should be selective like the lifted production forum is
prove yourself with a submission of work that proves you know what you're talking about and you're in
honestly he may be busy, but how often have you seen macc around with this influx of rehashed basic threads as of late?

i was on a forum with e-rep.
people who made stupid posts or did anything annoying we'd -rep them or flame them until they left.
solid strategy imo.
