Swing ... In logic?
I've looked around this forum trying to follow how to to actually get a swing with the hi hats in logic...in reason you've got the actual "SHUFFLE" button on the re-drum...in logic, all i can find is the Grooveshifter, but when i assign that to a group of hi hats ive placed...its not a dubstep shuffle...its like some mad rubbish kind of shuffle that doesnt even sound good. If you have a link on how to do it or can direct me through how to do it I would be really grateful. Cheers guys
Re: Swing ... In logic?
Sorry if this is a retarded question but have you tried using the quantise menu and selecting one of the 8X swing options in there?
Re: Swing ... In logic?
You cant quantise though if im using one hi hat at a time though can you? Like, ive got a channel for my hi hats and ive imported the one i like, then copy and paste it where i want it in that channel...how can you quantise all them at once?
But yeah i will also try putting it in my self...its kinda hard telling when exactly the hi hat should go to make the perfect shuffle...everything has to be perfect with me haha

Re: Swing ... In logic?
I find it very hard also to know where to do it. I have gone thru the templates and they all sound out of time with the groove:/ doing them manually is harder than it sounds.ts engage wrote:You cant quantise though if im using one hi hat at a time though can you? Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.
Re: Swing ... In logic?
yr making it too hard on yourself. if you like programming in the UB's step sequencer, great-- then grab the midi and drag it to the arrange window and quantize there.
There's literally hundreds of groove templates for logic available online; google, search, download, and import. details in the manual.

You need to find the right groove template for the genre you are making tho right? the templates that come with FL make quite a few changes to the position and velocity but the groove is so random and sounds terrible:/Sharmaji wrote:yr making it too hard on yourself. if you like programming in the UB's step sequencer, great-- then grab the midi and drag it to the arrange window and quantize there.

Re: Swing ... In logic?
forget genres, you're talking about the feel so it can be by song, or by section, or even by bar. The stuff that we're testing at gigs from our new record is often quantized differently between verse/chorus, etc. How something feels groove-wise is a HUGE part of how people experience it.serox wrote: You need to find the right groove template for the genre you are making tho right? the templates that come with FL make quite a few changes to the position and velocity but the groove is so random and sounds terrible:/
For the non-musically-trained, Blackdown's article on hihat programming that i keep linking to is a great read along these lines.

Re: Swing ... In logic?
sounds good guys thanks for the advice, im working on it now ive put them in manually and i THINK they sound alright, ill have to learn more about the UB because im just whack at using that... I'll upload it when im done though, should be in a few hours.
Also...when i save my project and quit logic...MASSIVE RESETS!!!???? why does this happen? i spent hours getting a sound i liked yesterday, i saved the track and everything and when i re-opened it this morning loads of the knobs in the box were back to default positions....soooo annoying and i cant even remember what position i had some of em at?

Re: Swing ... In logic?
right there are two ways really.
One with audio, and one with midi...
Midi-
Say you have a hihat 16th pattern straight, and you want them to swing...
open up your midi clip, and highlight the said pattern

then goto the quantise menu shown here

Logic comes with limited but good swings, you can actually import your own groves from your own audio/other midi clips to use again and again.
They should look something like this -

Then take the swung bits and finely tune them to taste. If you click then hold the command key (cmd) you can drag finely without the grid snapping

Right now with audio its pretty much the same beast, only you can use the events window. Here i shall explain...
highlight the bits you want swung, then goto the top menu: Window --> Events list
should look a bit like this

Then you can goto the quantise box and select your swing

then drag with cmd held to finely move bits. Hope i helped.
There are more advanced ways of doing this including the flex tool, but this is the basics...

also... DJ Dom, i really dont know how to use ultrabeat, it confuses me so much. I think i have it...then it just goes and twists it self ..ill have to learn more in to that
Re: Swing ... In logic?
Don't forget the humanise function too! If used subtly can really put some emphasis on certain hits and exploit the swing a little more, good for hand percussion bits.
