Cubase SX3 Stereo/Mono/Panning help

Post by dj tinman » Tue May 18, 2010 5:41 pm

Noob question, but its frying my brain :u:

Ive got a stereo audio file that I load into a stereo audio channel in Cubase SX3.

In Cubase SX3, why when I load a new stereo audio channel does it only create one channel that is panned to centre? I presumed there would be 2?
Is this becuase it is the actual stereo sample that I import (and not the channel) that will be panned hard left and hard right?

How would I go about reducing the stereo width of this for example? I don't want to mono it, just not have it panned hard left and hard right!

Blessings....

But there is only one pan control and it is already set to centre. Can i not adjust the seperate left and right values?

Yeah probably got our wires crossed or I'm just being a dick......

For example, on my analog mixer I have a synth hooked up. Channel 1 panned hard left, channel 2 panned hard right. When I record this into a cubase it is onto just one audio channel. This is where I'm stuck, I've got the synth recorded in stereo (or simply just loaded a stereo sample), but because Its only on one channel in Cubase I only have one volume fader, one pan fader etc etc. Is there no way of controlling both the left and right values of a stereo sample seperately???

By the way this is probably just me confusing myself as I try to fully understand mono/stereo and panning.....

Cheers

If you right click the panner on the channel you can change it to stereo dual panner. Then you have one for the left channel and one for the right.

Just got another couple questions regarding panning,

I understand how panning a mono sample will give it its own place in the stereo field but why pan a stereo sample? How do you lot pan stereo sounds? Do you reduce their "width" and then place them where u like? How does panning a mono sample differ from panning a stereo sample?

Niiiiiiiice

I pan stereo files (usually when mastering or on the main out) to give the mix some width

I s'pose you can do this to your samples or a pad to give it a unique placement in the mix
