how did you guys get into DJing?
how can i get into DJing and get gigs?
i'm going to do an audio engineering course that gives a little insight into DJing, but i already know how to do that, i just want paying gigs, ive done a few non-paying gigs before and i got good feedback, so how would i get into it... semi fulltime?

LOL. Start by not getting into DJing looking to get paid.
In all seriousness, go to good nights with music you like. Talk to people, make friends. Hand out some CDs or post some sets. And above all, do it because you love it and because you have something worthwhile to add to the mix...not because you want money.

In all reality most dj's dont make a shit ton off of dj... and most of them do it (or at least started doing it) for the music and not the money.
to answer your question get some decks and a mixer, headphones and monitors and start practicing

DJing for me, I just started playing around on my freinds decks and collecting 12"s I wasn't planning on getting serious about it at all. 15 years later lol but I don't think you should worry about gigs until you are already well into djing. That is the problem these days. So many kids start djing and then they have their own night a week later. Put some time into it. Have some pride in what you do. Show some respect to art of djing by holding yourself back as long as you can etc etc imo imo
Re: how to get into DJing?
Before any of that... get to know your music! Lot's and lot's of research and digging PLEASE!redraven wrote:In all reality most dj's dont make a shit ton off of dj... and most of them do it (or at least started doing it) for the music and not the money.

Re: how to get into DJing?
Actually I think I was reading you wrong. You are into djing, you want to know how to sort of break into the industry so you can do it like a part time job? LOL good luck with that one. You have to put a lot of work into promoting yourself. These days having some releases under your belt is almost a necessity. And even then you might not get paying gigs. Like others have said, just save your self a lot of time and money and forget about djing.aksys wrote:how did you guys get into DJing?

Not that I wanna be the search marm, but there have been a few threads about this. There might be some good info for you in there.
One bit of advice that I read was to start your own night. Make your own place in the biz, rather than looking form someone to give you a spot.
Fortune favors the bull, and that's no bull.

LOL. It's always a bonus. It's just rare to get paid much unless you got releases under your belt. And even then, you're lucky if you get more than beer.aksys wrote:oh, im not DJing just to get paid. but like, it would be a bonus ya know?djshiva wrote:LOL. play good music, and learn to take people on a journey with what you play and bend to the crowd and make em move shake and dance first and foremost
getting to travel, getting paid, and free driinks is a bonus
you gotta learn to crawl before you walk or run

Re: how to get into DJing?
youve gotta bring somthing new. done be a cookie cutter Dj and definatly dont play 100% the same genre (or sub genre) of music in 1 set all the way through.

Hahaha, don't look to be getting paid for AT LEAST 5 shows and thats providing you do so well within those shows people want to pay for you service.. See the thing is, what people don't realise..
Promoters book a DJ to get people through the door, its as simple as that. (of course, they 'should' like your music too) Sure you could get 100 of your mates to come and support you but say you book skream, you can garentee loads of people are gunna come out to see him, right?
So untill you have at least a little bit of clout, people won't pay you. DJing in the end is for the love and an investment, you won't be looking to earn back what you've spent DJing for a long way, let alone a profit.
If you want to DJ, learn, buy some decks and some vinyl but don't expect bookings, let alone paid bookings unless you've either got clout as a producer or have might fine DJ skills (or both).
Lecture over with...
I got into DJing from just hanging around mates who picked up DJing too..
I have gotten gigs due to the little name ive made for myself and people recomending me for someone whos cheap (or free) who will play a certain sound.

Re: how to get into DJing?
It would be amazing if someone would pay me to DJ. I've done a few shows but never gotten a dime for it. Maybe a couple free drinks but don't expect any more than that unless you are "bigtime"

Re: how to get into DJing?
most important thing (imo) is to remember is that it's not impossible to make it as a DJ. it's going to be hard, VERY hard no doubt but if you keep going for it, keep putting yourself out there and making sure you're in the right place at the right time and of course making sure your DJ skills are top notch then you've got a real chance
