Gotta wait until voting's done. DO NOT DISCLOSE PRODUCTION CREDITS UNTIL VOTING IS IN. Please. Pretty please.kontrol wrote:who made the goose that got away?? ? ??

And yes, that tune is ridiculously good. I'll bet if there was a mystery "name" producer who participated this time that it was theirs.

I'd have said Strawberry Swirl - surprised nobody's voted for it. From a fresh ideas point of view I'm well into Kone and Ice Hole, both have an awesome wonky originality to them...alphacat wrote:Gotta wait until voting's done. Alphacat's Thoughts (if you can call them that) On The Tunes

1) "Goose That Got Away" - WHOA. Floored - this one's THE contender right out the gate. Solid mix, solid progression, solid vibes... perhaps this is one of the tunes submitted by a "pro?" Honestly can't find anything that stands out as needing to be better/fixed... for the first time ever in a DSF competition. Goddamn it. I think I hate you. Tracks like this should be posted last in the future.
2) "Kone" - Loose & abstract. The drums become taxing after a bit compared with the ambience, like a PB&J sandwich with too much peanut butter.
3) "Strawberry Swirl" - Good name for this sound. Interesting drum edits & progression, slight discontinuity between the intro and bass drop but it works, esp. w/ that lovely bass weight. 2nd drop with bells is sick bidness. Biggest complaint? 3:46.
4) "Memories of Garage" - Sounds like many of us went straight to rinsing that ambient chord shit, as this smooth atmospheric vibe is popping up a lot in this contest. Title says it all – nice progression but I can’t help but think that our shortened attention spans might need to be smacked in the face somewhere right in the beginning somehow… a more developed hook up front might help.
5) “Nightshift” – Ah, nice – some genre variation. Drum mix is just a tad too hot (hats need to come down a pinch) and needs a little more breathing room + air; the master mix is just too brickwaved as well. Aside from these mix issues, though, this isn’t a bad little DnB tune.
6) “Radio Station Bonfire” – Nice atmosphere on this one. Drum mix could use a little more finesse; chord stabs are kind of generic. Mix needs more breathing room in the drop, and overall more parts/variation would help too.
7) “Desecrate” – Spank that bass! Interesting initially, this one might benefit from going back and selectively deleting a hit here, a note there… that and it could use more of a progression in that it parks on a theme and more or less stays there.
8 ) “Star Sailing” – Most original atmospherics yet. Unique & vaguely Burial-ish beat, but the drum mix isn’t loud enough and drums feel dampened & sonically flat; if the level were up on ‘em a little bit and some selective deletion [as mentioned above for #7] were employed with a little dubwise trickery & clearer sense of space, then the damp/flat thing could work. Interesting progression, fx - and the bass/synth combo at the end leaves me wanting more of it. This one should be worked on further too.
9) “Forward” – Think I know who did this but not sure… while I love minimalism, I also have a short attention span (so take it or leave it since it’s so subjective.) This one simply takes too long to get where it’s going given that there’s a 3 minute limit, and the drum mix is kinda dull. Although it’s usually best to err on the side of being conservative when faced between brickwaving the tits out of something versus not using enough compression or limiting on the master mix - this one actually could stand to be a couple dB’s hotter in order to stand up next to the rest of these mixes.
10) “Don’t Judge” – very interesting vibe, nice departure from the other entries so far. Could drop on many dancefloors and hold its own.
11) “Below” – nice beatwork and progression; the core ideas behind this tune are very solid and it could definitely be the seed of a very very good tune. Consider going off the map a little with the synth samples and developing the melodic stuff more.
12) “Neon Lights” – another very original contender; this one sounds like it wants to be an actual song with parts & melody and all that goodness, but loses a little momentum in the breakdown at 1:20 (which is too long) – possibly another melodic theme could be introduced instead? Does has a nice, subtle hook that sets it apart from all the wanky production whizbangery we usually indulge in around here. Restraint will always set you apart in a good way… I want to see this developed further as well and go some place deep with it.
13) “Ice Hole” – Heh, funny nobody else took the bait yet w/ that particular movie sample – and here you go charging in balls-deep by using it as an opener!
14) “Ego” – Textbook Dubstep vibes here. Production’s OK, needs more variation & progression imho: having that synth line repeat endlessly starts to take away from the song after a while. Great subs.
15) “Bassboat” – Fooled me into thinking you were going somewhere else… and I like where you went instead. Mix is thin through low mids and the hats are too loud; progression is fine, could maybe be a little more off-the-wall and less formula – surprise us more the way you did with the departure from the intro.
16) “Deeper Than Fire” – promising start, heavy with vibe… beautiful bass but a little hairy (clipping). Straightforward and thick (CamelPhat?) sounding drums… the 2nd layer you add around 2:00 sounds like it was just dropped on an existing copy of those bars might’ve done OK on its own, as things get muddy in the mix there. Strip it down or make room in the mix. (That's what she said...

Re: DSF SAMPLE PACK COMPETITION-23
I doubt it tbh, he really must have bigger fish to fry at this point. Is Peverelist even on the forum? No offense to him, but if it is him then I reckon he's done better....tripwire22 wrote:i dont i was trying to quote other guy. but if he did then we stood no chance?static_cast wrote:how do you know?tripwire22 wrote:peverelist made it...
