808 & 909 claps layered with something

I'm in a wildly elliptical orbit around the 808. Just love those sounds, sometimes I just put them down. I think I might do 10 or so beats right now just mainly 808.

those machines are my heart, they started my love for electronica.. i used to compose techno acid and house for days just using those samples (+ some bass). when i first started w/ dubstep they were all i used cuz it's what i had. i don't use 'em much now except maybe a 909 snare and hats. but once in a while i hear a joker tune or something with unabashed 808s, and i usually stick some in my next tune. they're just such classic sounds. that kick is one for the ages, man.

Wood blocks are nice for more glitchy/garagey type tunes.

But failing that I would lean more towards snares......

Slightly off topic:
What does everyone think of those huge metallic snares that actually make you wince when they hit? Best example I can think of is Disko Rekah by Loefah. I love that tune but fuck me the snare is just a little to "Ringy" and big for my liking.....

i usually find myself relying on claps. think you have to be a better producer than i to make a proper snare work. that or my drum patterns just lend themselves to claps.
thats dubstep proper though, for my 2steppy stuff nothing does a better job than a rim.

Snares all the way for me. Dont like claps, they remind me of shitty hiphop. I do layer a clap sometimes with a snare, which can give a extra snap, with the snare being more prominent ofcourse.

I have a hard time finding snare sounds that I like. Quite often go with claps/snaps and clicky sounds.

Snare, all day, everyday. Can't stand the sound of claps. If I ever were to use a clap I'd need to get like 500 different versions. I can't stand hearing the same clap sample being used over and over again. It drives me insane.

depends what im doing... for a floor filler type, i like to layer some white sound with a clap, throw spring reverb on it and add a reverse hat right before it.

for chillout, i like stick or rim hits.

A technique which I have used is to sample the striking of a match and layer that with either a snare or clap etc.
Great way to get original textured samples. You'd be amazed at how versatile the match striking sample can be.
Also try bouncing a tennis ball on a piece of wood or wall for a kick.
