Difference between Djing Dubstep and hip hop/pop?

Post by borrowed » Fri May 21, 2010 11:35 pm

So I usually spin dubstep, house, electro, and some dnb. Im booked for a top 40/hip hop night nearby for tomorrrow, and I'm wondering if there are any differences? I know the song structure is so varied its hard to link the drops together like dubstep or dnb. Any tips, or advice?

Fuck tryna beatmatch and just drop that shizzatch. I guarantee more people'll be sayin' "whoa, that dj was droppin this/that/other"(hopefully excited), than sayin " I can't believe the lack of beatmatching". Think everyone there is a punter rather than a nerd like us lot!

Haha scoped the club out last weekend and I can't agree more. I hear its more about selection. Hardest part for me is playing Kesha and shit like that without going red in the face.

To be honest, any differences there are should be celebrated - in the fact that coming from a different angle, you won't sound the same as what they have heard before. That is a good thing.

The only thing I would comment on (and it is more for the hiphop side rather than the pop side), hiphop dj's know how to rock a crossfader. In hiphop it is less about the double drops as it is about getting two tight tracks locked, then cutting between em, blending em, and creating your own on the fly.

When I dj hip hop I do alot of live remixing, like mixing one track with the instrumental of another. Just kill the bass of one of them. Other than that it's a lot of ziga ziga ziga ziga, fade to new song. Just keep the transfers as quick and fresh as you can. Rock the stop button on the 4, fade to new track or rewind on the 2 or 3 and fade or scratch in new track. It's really easy.

closer bpms for matching and no lyric/flowing clashes
it's all about having a musical mind
i toss hip hop into my dubstep sets all the time and have had people straight jack some of my mixes

140 or 70 bpm

you just need an ear and know how to be a performer
genres are meant to be crossed if you now what you are doing

ha i had to spin one of those type nights...
i lost a bit of respect for myself when i was glad the transition to a lady gaga tune went well

def more about selection than skill.. just tried to get tunes that had somewhat close bpms to attempt to mix

but i couldnt help but sneak a few dubstep tunes in there :D
found that kyza - go (bar 9 remix) was a good one to play for a hip/hop crowd because of the "rap style" vocals
also the chase and status remix of heartbeat had some people noddin there heads

hope all goes well man :e:
My first dubstep tune, been producing for around 5 months, so be gentle, lemme know what you think :D
