im 15, 16 in 4 days :o

Been listening to dubstep for only 2 years, and producing for 1-ish. Have seen alot of young people in my local area getting into dubstep recently. Mt eden blaring at the back of busses and that sort of stuff :D

I've seen this type of statement mentioned here quite a lot (in this thread, alone). Could someone please explain what that means? Or point me to some producers? There seems to be a shift in dubstep and since I've only just started listening to it, I only know all the prominent ones. Basically, what direction is dubstep going? Could someone please clarify :)

Oh, and I'm 20 by the way.
what statement? future garage?

Dubstep is going in all different directions man. Thats why its so popular and why i love it so much, because its so diverse
You know, stuff like "I hate them kidz going on about borgore and mt.eden wobbly wobbly shit, they should listen to some 'proper' dubstep"... What is 'proper' dubstep? It's just that I feel something is changing, so I'm kind of worried that by the time I finish my getting into dubstep, it will have changed altogether into something new, like "future garage", whatever the hell that means, so I'll have to start over. Like I said, I'm very new but very excited about all of this, so I don't want to end up always having to play catch up. Want to be aware of all the latest trends, I mean, in a good way, as an aspiring producer, not a hipster :)

found dubstep at 17, now nearly 20. not going to say what i do and do not like as its irrelevent, but i definitely opened my mind a bit more after listening for the first year. i love the majority of it.

There are loads of different types of dubstep. and recently, a lot of artists that dubstep fans are into which aren't strictly dubstep per say. but if you want to know artists that you should listen to just because they make good music, old or new, dubstep or not, then i would suggest...

Burial
Digital Mystikz (Mala, Coki, Loefah)
Distance
Ramadanman
Martyn
Pinch
Scuba
Mount Kimbie
James Blake
Joy Orbison
Hyetal
Boxcutter
Vex'd
Kuedo
Guido
Joker
Gemmy
Mensah
Phaeleh
Starkey
Slugabed
Sbtrkt
Zomby
16Bit
Tokimonsta
Flying Lotus
Nosaj Thing
Ikonika
Darkstar
Rustie

On and on the list goes, but if you want to keep ahead of the game in terms of electronic music. Listen to Mary Anne Hobbs' shows, she has sick taste.

One thing i will say, you shouldn't take much notice of people saying you should listen to 'proper dubstep' because at the end of the day, you should listen to what you like. A lot of people won't like a lot of the artists i've listed above but its all just opinion. Mt eden are shit though

i'm 20. been listening for about 3 years and producing house for about a year as a result of getting into dubstep i think its great theres so many young people involved in the scene, thats what its all about really isn't it. its nice having a range of ages, but its brilliant to see young people with educated taste in music. you don't get that with quite a few genres of electronic music.

i'm sure theres plenty of older lurkers on here ;) i don't know anyone younger than me who likes dubstep

I'm 20, went to my first dubstep rave in 06, got into the sound through radio about mid 05. Its quite nice to see so many people younger than me if I am honest, I remember when I first went on this board everyone was in their 20s or older and so was everyone at nights.

What do you mean by sometimes 'they get it wrong'?

just little things which get on my nerves, bumping into someone or spilling their drink and not apologising. sometimes they come and either get too mashed or drunk and make tits of themselves, either jumping about and smashing into others or starting on each other. i dunno. it really depends on what kind of night it is, who's playing etc but i have sometimes found myself getting wound up by a group of people who are clearly on the young side and don't really respect others at the nights
Yeah I get you. Probably alot to do with the fact that in general young peeps are more up for getting wasted and at more extreme levels and as a consequence less appreciative of the people around them. I have seen similar and I am sure I have done it accidently in the past.
Has to be said though the vibe in general at dubstep is better than any other nights out I go on (only exception being the circus records takeover in manc, that was well aggy, prob not very surprising as it was constant angry dubstep all night lol)

20, started listening when i was 15/16 - just thought id 'try it out' and here I am 4/5 years later enjoying dubstep more than most other genres lol.
id say iv gota pretty diverse taste which includes most styles of dubstep, some jump-up does get on my nerves tho as more credible names can be overlooked. its all about searching around to see what u like, take what u want, and dash what u don't.

EDIT: @ above poster, i was guna go to that event but i got called away @ the last min, how was it overall despite the (evident) aggyness?

Im 29 too. 30 in about 6 weeks so starting to feel it at gigs too. Hangovers starting to kick in and kids asking for Jakwob and filthy stuff.

If the kids wanna come and play thats cool. People find their groove after a while and even the best of us liked some shit when we were younger, guilty pleasures are not just limited to the people with crap musical taste.

What does it matter if someone likes stuff like Mt Eden or Burial. Horses for courses, important thing is to decide for yourself what is good and what your going to push. Just stop asking for it when I am trying to mix, Im not going to be educated on something that I found by myself and I do for myself.

18 and 7 months :D . Can't remember when I got into Dubstep :? Think my first dubstep 'experience' was when a mate of mine played a bit of Burial.
Found Skreams "In for the kill" remix and loved it, still do tbh, used to love when I had to walk to/from work at early/late hours and listening to it on repeat :o
Started searching for more dubstep and came across this forum which has shown me theres more to dubstep than what I had on the phone. (I was jamming to alot of Rusko, Caspa, and the usual remixes found on the 1st "dubstep" search on YouTube). Still feel really new to it all now, Not had the chance to go to a dubstep night as everytime there is one on, I get called into work! :(
