Prop are pretty stingy, bros. Still, if you a reason head, I'm sure you'll get some new toys to play with.

Fixed.

-----------------------

I'm underwhelmed already by the first announcment. While Octapoo is certainly an improvement over Dr.Rex, what's the point unless there's a new in built 'slicer' to boot?

Let us pray they actually implement some of the features users have been asking for for years FFS.

-----------------------

Some ideas for new devices I posted on the Propellerheads forum ages ago... It will be interesting if any of them are implemented (although I doubt it).

New Filter device
* A new filter device that combines all the filters from the existing units. While it is already possible to route audio through both the Malstrom and Thor, the process is unnecessarily convoluted. As work flow speed is a consideration for many people, this will help speed things up when building custom Combinators etc.
* The device would probably need to be a full rack width unit, and possibly have a drop down section like the RV7000.
* Maintain the X/Y tracking control from the Thor
* Include all the filter types found in Reasons existing units
* Have an on-board ADSR for when it is Combined in a Combinator
* Include LFO modulators like those found on the Malstrom, complete with one shot modes and invertible CV
* CV inputs for the filter cut off and resonance.
* True frequency readouts in hertz as opposed to midi values 0-127

Granular time-stretching & pitch-shifting effect. A simple effect can be built with the NN-19, why not create a unit that does this to live audio inputs?

New LFO device with user drawable LFO shapes

New Sampler
* Fully automatable controls
* Waveform view, allowing sample start and looping points to be moved directly on the waveform window

Redrum
* Reverse button for each channel

Combinator
* More Combinator controls. 8 rotaries and 8 buttons, possibly contained in a drop down section a la RV7000.
* Selectable modes for the rotaries, allowing them to go from -63 - +64 as well as the current 0 – 127.
* Selectable modes for the buttons. It would be useful to have 'flick switch' buttons. Ones that only stay on until the mouse/midi control is let go again. This would allow for more creative live applications of the Combinator.
* Allow CV trim pots to be assigned to the Combinator front panel controls, complete with minimum & maximum range
* Assignable controls for the Matrix device
* Assignable controls for the 'advanced' controls in the NN-XT device

Malstrom
* You know what's coming. User waveforms in the oscillators. I know this is possible as the free VST Atlantis, available from http://jeremyevers.com/?page_id=15 , does it with ease.
* More Modulator shapes. (Or similar to Atlantis VST again, user waveforms that can be used as Modulator shapes)
* Automatable oscillator waveshape changes, either directly in the sequencer, or in Combinators.

NN-XT
* Automatable 'advanced' controls.
* Assignable 'advanced' controls in the Combinator

NN-19
* An updated 'sample start' control that allows for longer sample lengths.

Thor
* A new, more logical layout. For example: Why are the amp env ADSRs not next to the oscillators? Why are the LFO's not next to each other? Why aren't the filter env ADSRs next to each other or the filters? Why aren't the filters stacked like the oscillators?
* Even if a new layout would take marginally more screen space, the work flow improvement and ease of use for beginners would be a great advantage. To be honest, the new chorus and delay sections are unnecessary as these effects can be added as a insert or send using the existing rack devices. They take up space that could be used to make the synth portion of Thor more accessible.

Hyped for these announcements, although not bothered by the first one at all.. If they some of the improvements you mentioned futures it will make up for it a bit though. :P

I wanted to jump off propellerheads ship a while ago now...But other DAWs are just too unfamiliar now. Live is weird to me, Reaper could be fine if I could find some VST's I liked. It seems a little retarded to switch from Reason then try to find the closest VST to Reason's synths and drum machine.
My little foray into big dog DAWs taut me that I am pretty happy with Reason even tho it has it's flaws.

So yeah I am pretty stoked on the new update, and I'm sure the next few updates will be sweet too.

Actually I'm glad Reason 5 is coming out.

I disliked the new features in R4, so R5 will allow me to forget that R4 ever happened. :)

Every cloud has a silver lining they say... (Although they also say you can't polish a turd).

Blocks - making Reason more like Fruity Loops.

It will help to speed up arrangements. Hopefully it will improve on the horrible sequencer in R4...

One good thing about Reason over Fruity is that one doesn't need to change tool to do simple things like set loop points, copy blocks etc.

Reaper ftw! :P

They are gonna make it so you don't have to buy a usb stick to try the demo? I mean who's idea was it that you had to pay to use a demo version of software that's not even fully functional to any extent. They were just asking for people to pirate their shit.

You're thinking of Cubase...you can run the Reason and Record demos without a usb stick.

And just to chime in...I have a fairly good feeling about this update. I'm not sure why people are disappointed in the changes to Dr. Rex, since now it looks like you can do what you should've always been able to do with it. The fact that you can map the slices to different outputs in itself is pretty necessary.

The Blocks thing is alright but nothing groundbreaking by any means...it's a welcome addition, but I agree with whoever said that they better be saving the best (three) for last.

There's always going to be people complaining about Propellerhead products. From reading stuff on various message boards, talking with people, etc., it seems like a lot of people don't understand the POINT of Reason. If they did, you wouldn't see all of these people wishing for VST support.

And to whoever said the sequencer in Reason sucks...yeah it has it's quirks, but it does the job just fine. The Cubase sequencer has way more options but is a total mess in the way it behaves, especially regarding automations.

The change is great for workflow, but it isn't a killer feature. How many people have been asking for this feature anyway???

cloak and dagger wrote:The blocks are alright but nothing groundbreaking by any means...
Exactly.

Sod VST support in Reason, just make Reason a VST so we can banish Rewire to Room 101 ffs.

Which is exactly why I hate Cubase and wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

Reaper for the win!

Reaper for the win!

I have no idea how many people are asking for it, but it's incredibly useful all the same. Definitely a welcome feature. Besides, some of the requested features are pretty lame (a new layout for Thor? Really?),

I don't give a fuck about Reaper though, not gonna get into an argument about what computer program is better.

edit: I would LOVE Reason as a VST though, since the only thing I really really miss from it are the advanced reverb and distortion units...still haven't found a VST, pay or otherwise, that can hold a candle to them.
