I don't own a macbook but I know that when I do buy one I will definitely be going for the macbook pro only because of the firewire issue. I actually think it's a bit out of order of apple not to supply these in the normal macbooks though, don't see why they can't.

Are macbook pro's not more powerful btw? Surely you don't pay extra just because of those things you mentioned? (Can't be bothered to trapes all the way through the apple store ;))
They are considerably more powerful, mostly in the graphics card.

iDVD comes installed. You can also right-click on something and just hit "burn [folder name]" to disk, but I'm not sure if it works with DVDs.

I cant stand Mac's ,even though I have a Powerbook G4. But on topic, Id say get Cubase. Logic 8 or 9 is good too but pricey and really not as user friendly as Cubase. The automation and sidechaining in Cubase is straight forward in comparison to the ole "Bus,Route and Sends" ordeal. But besides those DAW's. The rest are garbage. With an exception to Renoise.

Nope, Im def' not a Ableton fan.

I quite like this - http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/audio/vfx.html combined with Soundflower, just in case you miss any of your old Windows VSTs.

I would advise skipping both of those and just get VLC.

Yeah, you can always do that. My G5 (and my wife's Intel-based MacBook) don't like VLC. All versions of VLC have crashed frequently.

 it's one of those simple bish-bash-bosh programs that does everything it needs to in the most user friendly way possible!

And to people who asked earlier - Burn does DVD's, in movie format as well as data
