Your never gonna beat piracy so there isn't really much point in stressing over it.
This!!! Actually want the tune not only on vinyl but also on MP3. MP3 code should be given with the vinyl like they did it with the Autechre and the Martin Buttrich album.

If it wasn't for P2P, my legal music collection would be significantly smaller.

I buy more music than most people I know. I also download more music than most people I know. It's try before you buy, and if it is used responsibly, I don't see any problem with it. Now the kiddos who only download and never buy music, that's a different story.

to provide some balance - on another forum i go on where the artist Ott sometimes posts he made a post about filesharing which basically said without it he wouldn't have been able to make a career out of music. the same is also true for artists like sage francis, immortal technique and others.

i've always bought music and always will but i don't think filesharing is the big evil it is made out to be.

from an artistic point of view i want my music to be released as an entity in full without any promotion from anyone/anywhere else regardless of whether it makes less money...

I am going to unleash something this year that i am very proud of and will pay good money to get mastered well/pressed well on the label im starting...am i supposed to be delighted at all the exposure im gonna get if it gets downloaded illegally???

of course not

dont you hate the shit quality sometimes and go and buy the tunes legally though?

i think they should give the mp3 away for convenience myself if youre gonna buy the wax
This is something that I really agree with.

I use traktor just because I dont want to have to bring around all my vinyl when playing out and because some of the records I have managed to get are really special to me and they dont need to be in a bag where they could be dropped or have some dope drop a beer on them.

I mostly use flacs, wavs and 320 mp3s when DJing. would prefer to use records all the time but its not practical.

well higher than money is the possibility of being able to live from music and music alone. there is no reason why you couldn't make as much income as Ott does from music, isn't like he is the 2nd coming or anything yet he's just returned to the u.k from doing a tour of yank.

anyways if money doesn't matter why care how people hear your material, surely enriching their life is enough pay :P

Not many people make very much money producing / recording music alone. It's all about live shows if you want the coin.

You only get booked for shows on the back of a big name and the easiest way to get a big name is to produce.

or any once you've factored in the amount of money you've spent on getting equipment together and the thousands of hours spent in front of the screen crafting your art.

making a living is all one needs to make incredible music...this doesnt need to come entirely from the music either....having principles and caring about your hard work not being shared like a village slut because shes oh so asking for it will stand an artist well long term..

all im asking is to end the justification that gets really silly...i mean seriously how the fuck does people downloading gravious eps illegally help him get more gigs especially when its not strictly dancefloor material

are you guys saying it ONLY helps those making tunes for a dancefloor?

i need more evidence than your or their say so tbh

sage francis is huge anyway as is regina they can afford to say such things....

how did afrika bambaataa get so big without file sharing thats what want to know...how did erik satie get recognition?

i tell you how an artist blows up at least in dubstep and thats by getting a tune to the right djs and getting it caned...look at emalkay....i still have the utmost respect for him of course but his first few releases were NEXT LEVEL bats in the belfry, gut feeling, road grit etc were all fucking massive....crunk in space , my story still big, big tunes and yet he had gotten knowhere despite im sure having his tunes nicked off torrent sites in huge numbers by people that just grabbed all the boka releases after doing a search...

THEN he made when i look at you and everyone played it despite it being well.....not that great in many peoples minds......it was caned non-stop and as a result he got it signed to dub police and got to remix pendulum!

how did they get to that point?

sage has exactly the same opinion as you about file-sharing which i find a bit rich seeing as he would still be selling ice-cream to kids if it wasn't for people downloading his shit all over the place. btw i have bought loads of sage francis stuff, as i said before i always have bought and always will buy music, nothing is going to change that but credit where credit is due.

I think you need to look at this as i said earlier at different angles

spiritually maybe

i dont see how everyone illegally downloading your music rescues you from an actual life of work

i have a few mixes in my sig and havent found theyve helped me have to do less work as they both accumalated the 1000 or so downloads theyve had

i dont think so as when ive had a slot elsewhere theyve not heard them and my residency in my sig they just knew me as i used to promote there...nothing to do with downloading but everything to do with grass roots
