Yeah, just like any other genre/scene/whatever, there is always worthless garbage (IMO of course) being produced and released, but there are a lot of talented dudes just making tunes cause they love to do it, and there is an amazing amount of quality stuff! Really don't feel like most of em have any interest in pushing an image tbh, most of the stuff I buy is basically completely anonymous, often times there are not any credits (or even song titles!), reminds me a lot of white label dance music culture. Sure you can go researching online and find out who is involved in what projects, but for the most part these are anonymous transmissions. If anything, I find that there is a concerted effort NOT to create any image--- totally unlike much of the indie rock scene.
Just as an aside, thought I'd mention that lots of this stuff is just live jamming, straight to cassette or whatever, which gives it a totally different feel to produced music. I mean, it's basically freeform jazz made using just about any and every conceivable object as an instrument along with heavy use of field recordings etc. Took me a while to really appreciate a lot of it, but it's proven to be hugely rewarding
