here's a cure for your un-inspiredness

Post by narcissus » Mon May 31, 2010 8:12 am

so this is a problem for the artistic community in general it seems.. not me personally, cause i'm never want for inspiration.. but from what i hear people have trouble gettin ideas. well worry no more cuz i think i got it nailed. i'm feelin damn good right now and i have a wonderful song in me waiting to get out. i will describe how i got here. first off: you can't force good music/art. it can ONLY come naturally. and the way it comes naturally is to fill your soul with beautiful things.
if you're not sure you've done this, go do it ASAP.

it's not hard. do some meditation maybe. commune with nature. just watch animals or plants do their thing. insects bring me peace personally. if you can see that we are nothing more than a slightly different version on their format, you're on the right track.
but if that isn't working, hang out with some people. people you love. all day today i chilled at the beach smokin w/ some mates and a girl who is really feelin me at the moment.. she can't stop saying how beautiful my eyes are  i'm about to go make a pretty little song to send to her. spend some quality time with good people and i guarantee you will have your muse whispering in your ear. if you aren't good friend with any good people, then go do that.
go to where you feel safe. make good things happen there. let that energy fill you and heal you if need be. once you can look within and see not wounds and fear, but scars and hope, then you will make the best music of your life.

that's it.
sorry if this post rubs you in any wrong way, i'm from Santa Cruz CA. we're kinda crazy here

Loved the read.

I can't say anything but that I agree 100%. After a long day of nice weather, good times and bbq's I always make better tunes.

Makes me wonder what the fuck I am thinking living in the UK...

Not always, lots of amazing songs come from depressing, horrible things, the best music too in my opinion.

It works both ways. My guess is that amazing songs come from all kinds of emotions.

Yea, I can't write happy songs at all. Everything I write is based on depressing shit. Nice thread though.

there is beauty in sadness, loneliness, depression even.. or rather, when you feel those things it's probably just feeling the absence of beauty, or longing for it.. it's all tied in. just because an experience is beautiful doesn't mean it's happy.. i mean, i think tool makes amazingly beautiful music, and it's dark as hell.

Well said.

Yesterday I was sitting on the balcony - good times, enough cigarettes, some beers, enough food - laptop on my lap.

I made a very fucking sad tune!

I'm the first to admit that the simple things in life make me happ(ier)

I had a good weekend this one just gone, saw Rusko/Diplo/Joy Orbison live, did some drugs in moderation and generally released some nice endorphins. Took a break from DSF and producing, and I would like to think I am fresh of ideas again.

Don't force creativity. Let it come naturally as Narc says. It's so true.

I had an evening off from sound last night. Got home, had some food then just sat in my room and read. No music, no computer, no xBox, turned the phone off, no TV. Just read and chilled.

Came in today with a fresh head about things, really relaxing stuff.

Bloody hippies ;)

I find if you are truly stuck pile up loads of random music, not just dubstep, and fire through it. If you are still stuck just try and straight up copy something you like and change the noises.

Thanks for the tips mate. But whenever I watch an insect it makes me wanna shoot it
with a .50 rifle. Guess I should find something else.

Nice thread!
