Easily, using their ear for music. Music theory is just a way to describe music. Music was there before the theory. If you have any sort of ear, you will find your way to the scales and chords that sound good together. Theory is only a way to understand WHY it sounds good.

If you can already make it sound good, you don't need to know a single thing about theory to write a hit song, and many many many artists know next to nothing about why what they play on their guitar/synth/whatever sounds good.

Don't get me wrong, knowing the theory behind music helps immensely, if only to aid in inspiration, but it is not even close to being required.

Only music theory I know is from reading stuff online. So my music theory knowledge is sketchy at best. However, like Kaiori had mentioned, even though I don't know much about music theory there are just certain things you pick up over time that you may not realize why this or that sounds good, but it does so you kinda file it back in your mind and use it again. I would say having some knowledge of chords/scales will help. You don't have to memorize them, but having a reference from somewhere is a nice tool to have.

It also helps to have some sort of method. I also found that making a chord progression first makes it a lot easier to build a melody. Don't try to get all complex with your melodies at first though. Stick to simple melodies until you get a better feel for what notes sound good together and how to move up and down your scales. Timing is critical as well. Melodies are something I'm working on myself, and it can be frustrating at first. Just keep at it.

Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

Just checked it and would agree.

I am guessing you got told you sound oldskool by people who make Datsik?

Takes more than simple waveform baselines for a track to be oldskool to me :D
