Mt Eden played the second DJ set before Optimus Grime's and Truths sets on friday night just been. I stepped into the room for about 10-15min to see if their DJ skills are as appalling as their production skills. The room was packed with people (though I imagine most were there to watch 5 chicks from the crowd lifting their skirts and bending over on top of the bass bins) the mixing was pretty poor at best. So went back into the DnB room until O.G's set!

Yep, there where a whole bunch of aggressive hyped up "mt eden is the greatest producer alive" bros in there. Like you I walked straight in and out when mt eden was on (sounded like they where playing low quality tunes 128kb youtube rips aswell maybe). truth & optimus absolutely merked it !

i called into an indie radio station the other day, and requested disco rekah, and then added "but anything classic by coki or loefah will do if you dont have that."

and then, he comes on... saying my name and saying i requested this song, and puts on a low quality sierra leone

i facepalmed so hard that i almost swerved off the road... not a terrible song but still made my stomach churn

Seriously though, I don't get all the hype - there's a million kids on youtube remixing the top 40 songs with shit production technique and no originality - why does he get all the hype?! What about the unsigned kids who work fucking hard to make their shit tight as, and don't get anywhere near the exposure they deserve?! Waste.

hmm, it's interesting that you mention this question, because i was going to start a new thread on this, but i guess i'll ask it here:

The Mystery of Mt. Eden.

okay, so, how did they get to the point that they are now?

I have two theories (but i know there are other factors, i welcome people to join)

1. They included the word "Dubstep" in most of their titles... before i heard people noting them as "Mt. Eden" (now that they're popular..), they would refer to them as "Mt. Eden Dubstep"
-This has an interesting consequence when you think of things in terms of search queries. Anyone who hears brostep at a party for the first time, and goes "OMG WHAT IS THIS!?" to his friend, they will most likely reply "dubstep"
-The next morning, said kid wants to hop on the bandwagon, so he hops to YouTube and types in "dubstep"
-What pops up? since youtube isnt genre based, only videos with dubstep in their title appear first, followed by those with dubstep in their description...

2. Which leads me to point 2: Youtube.
-YouTube is global, and is responsible for various viral things... such as the discovery of the lovely and talented Justin Bieber
-Easily embedded, so word spreads fast
-Poor production, but not unlistenable, so the average person who wants to hear standard wubz will be treated to what they want, and will name drop them to sound cool.

3. Controversy.
-there's no such thing as bad publicity. he remixed archangel. the world got fairly angry.
-their popularity grows exponentially, since people either love or hate them.
-now that their supremely popular, it's impossible to stop... i.e. me writing all this about someone who i havent even really listened to more than a couple of times.

Yes! The slow but sure demise of DECENT sounding music. With the MP3 and illegal downloading so big at the minute, the average teenager considers a 96kbps youtube rip a perfectly acceptable listening experience. The newer generations are slowly becoming used to worse sound quality with the rise of all these lossy formats and youtube rips. I read somewhere that in a listening test, many teenagers chose a 128kbps MP3 as sounding BETTER than a WAV copy...which is just unbelievable !

Because they're becoming used to this lower sound quality, the line between decent production and audio quality vs shit production and audio quality is becoming more blurred - because they're missing out on several kHz of human hearing, everything sounds worse, but because they're used to it they think it sounds as good...

hmm, interesting point! not really sure how that would bolster the eden's popularity tho...

i think when people get used to a certain quality, it almost tricks their brain into thinking it's the norm... most people dont have decent headphones/speakers so their really isnt a different in quality from wav and mp3, because their laptop speakers dont really convey it too well.

this can, however, lead to a quality revolution within each individual tho.. i personally remember the first time i started noticing the difference... and once you go HQ, everything else just disappoints

Mt Eden have helped take dubstep from its dark and reclusive underground roots to a wider and more mainstream crowd.

"I know my sound is unique to other dubsteppers out there.

" It's trancey, melodic, dubstep - that's what I like, something with a riff, a nice melody, that's vocal-driven, and when you dance to it you dance because you feel good.

Mt Eden's plan is to take live dubstep on the road with a band and vocalist, they are also teaming up with up and coming singer Ruby Frost to record, and head to Europe and the US for two months later in the year.
