funny, i'm suppose to be out there w/ Sub Swara in Dec

you should def play the joints you like bro... and DEF PLAY ONLY DUBSTEP... there is no other way for you to know if peeps are feeling it or not. Give them at least 2 hours and play that shit that made you fall in love with the music...

Big ups on pushing the scene man, I'm at the start of building a scene in York (where everyone goes mad for DnB so pushing Dubstep is quite hard) I find the crowd usually goes off to the breakier side of stuff to get them all dancing seeing as they are used to jumpin around a lot etc but if you've got a good rig then half step riddims can go off, even with a crowd of Dubstep virgins. At the last night I put on the crowd were cheerin more when a Dubstep tune got pulled up than when a DnB one did later on

Think it`s not depending that far on the tracks played...more the surrounding.
try to get some decoration related to Hinduistic divine avatars mixed up with symbols of western modernity. The societal layers interested in that kind of music should be/ are middle class kids with western education background.
The uneducated and traditional orientated ones won`t make it to your party.
a) cannot afford admission fee b) no money for drinks/ or not drinking c) Party or Club isn`t a local concept of recreation d) People are coming because of their affinity to western culture patterns....e) layers aren`t mixing that easy in segmentary societies like india is one (caste, religion, economic state)

So get some pictures with ganesha and a mobile in hands or Krishna with a bazooka or some, try to match western cultural figures on a traditional background (i.e. religious symbols/ avatars). That should work like Bhangra did it inverse in UK-area. And put some hope innit!

Just a suggestion...But see that music is working better with a complete scale of symbols to identify one self. See all the T-Shirts made. See the D`n B reffering to the technoscape and the rising of the machine. See HipHop and his symbols which juxtapose the ghetto. See the peace sign of the Hippie movement...
Asian Underground gave self consciousness to the masses of asian diasporic youth in Uk/ worldwide...The emergence of a pop music scene we do know is in India strongly connected to the influence of the returning of asian diaspora music in India/ Asia, and it`s roots in Bhangra and other folkloristic music. The market before was occupied by classical Hindi music and it`s dependency to cultural agents which reffered in their decision to their societal state and listening commodities...
I don`t know much `bout the scene in mumbai, but can speak out of lecture and research...

Dubstep isn`t a mass phenomena yet. Dubstep is called by a lot of people student`s grime. So it`s a special kind of person which is listenig to that kind of music. the narrative elements are rare (Lyrics are missing) the structures of tracks is often more deliberately constructed than other club music tracks are. sympathizing melodies are reduced and just sprinkle the dark and strange atmospheres.
So it`s very hard to stomp numb to the rythm (like in Techno /Disco Music). You have to let loose and flow (see threads to the dancing problem), a more known praxis in rock music.

dropped that once at a shiva soundsystem party here in London as my intro tune..(had to beg loef for a month to get it)..everyone was like WTF is this.....worked very very well but that was back in 2004

Of course having a live dhol player alongside your tabla player
would be great too. Shit, if you have access. . try to dig up some
actual songs from classic Bollywood flicks like Sholay, Disco Dancer,
Shaan, Qurbani or maybe even some recent ones and drop that shit too!

Peeps know dem tunes like the back of their hands.
Great way to mix it up and ease em into whatever you'd like!

I've played/been to a few bhangra parties here in Houston and
by no means is it comparable to being in Mumbai [@ a club/event],
but once that dhol gets going alongside a solid tabla player. . . . big vibes!

If you're mostly playing to western tourists with no knowledge of the music though I'd go for the anthems, but I think that'd be standard with most new music.
