when isit time time to upgrade?
easy fellas,
basically i got an imac desktop, had it about 4 years..
its not like anything goes wrong with it really. the only thing that peeves me about it is constantly only has about 4gb HD space.
essentially i just want to upgrade to the latest and greatest, get logic 9, reason 4 and 'start a fresh', so to speak.
what r u ur suggestions?
cheers

it's time to upgrade when it hinders your workflow and you reach a breaking point in creativity because of it.aleks zen wrote:easy fellas,

from the sounds of it your comp is dated or you need a new hd
Re: when isit time time to upgrade?
Yeah i replaced the HD in mine (sounds like the same model (white intel imac right?)
It was a bitch, and then sold it to upgrade to the new imacs that absolutely FLY! 3.06ghz core duo 4 gig ram. Shit graphics card but oh well.
Have you thought of selling the imac (they are still worth around £300 on ebay) and building a hackintosh? I have no idea how, but i have heard its becoming easier and easier with just one installer for the software system etc...

Re: when isit time time to upgrade?
I have the 2GHz white imac and currently have 2 external HDDs to keep everything on. Until very recently I was running everything fine without running out of power. Unfortunately now I almost always run out of power and it definitely does limit my creativity. The lack of screen space is also a limiting factor for me.
It sounds like you have very similar problems to me. If you can afford one, the new mac pros should be announced sometime soon and you should hold out. Otherwise now is quite a good time to get hold of the new imacs on the refurb pricing.
If money is tight - have you maxed the RAM and bought an external HD? Also if you have another mac (eg laptop) and logic you could run distributed processing to offload some CPU load.

Re: when isit time time to upgrade?
sounds ok to me! i've got a late 2007 macbook, still rocking logic 8. I've got a 500GB HD in there now, it's running fine - chugs a bit sometimes but not enough to justify a whole new comp.
If I was you, I'd get an external hard disk, and throw my finished projects and iTunes library on it. that should free up your hard disk space, which will get things running a bit quicker too

Re: when isit time time to upgrade?
I've needed a new comp for awhile now... 2.4gHz processor with .99 ( yes .01 less than a full gig) of RAM and a 70GB hard drive just doesn't cut it anymore...

Re: when isit time time to upgrade?
i move from working on a desktop family computer to a dell inspiron 15 brand new 1000$ nz dollar. i got this average falling apart usb sound amp... 115$ speakers. i love it
hahah just wish i had bigger speakers yea.. i feel like i have the constant trouble of feeeling the sound coming out of one speaker louder than the other.. kinda would like to move to a more professional desktop set up .. probably a long way away
upgrade when u have A) the spare cash and B) when u feel unhappy with what u have .
in the long run it will be worth it .. as long as u keep making beats

Re: when isit time time to upgrade?
I thinks its more of a RAM issue. I obviously work on less then anyone here lol - Sony Vaio 1.73Ghz - . But I have 2g's of RAM. even with 10 tracks loaded in cubase theres no glitch. Same with my powerbook, its only a 1.67 Ghz. Rarely does it glitch, only after 13 tracks with heavy effects.
But having a external HD is def' a standard/mandatory.Then again, with 1TB external HD's going for 80 bucks new now, How could you not have one
On another note, I had a 3.4 Ghz toshiba, and it was pure garbage. Even with 2g's RAM

Backup files, reformat.
Mac's aren't infallible even if Steve wants you to think they are.

it is connecting 2 computers via ethernet and using one as a slave to do extra processing work.Ennayess wrote:what is that?alex_l wrote:you could run distributed processing to offload some CPU load.
Logic has support for it built in called Logic Nodes. It relies on you having more than one mac though.
